lilnix, I feel your frustration. I have been waiting for over 8 weeks for some sort of contact from Howard and received none. Since I have already been accepted elsewhere and I have decided to go there, I sent my withdrawal letter to Howard. Good luck to you and everyone else waiting!

Congrats on your acceptance!! I know you've been waiting for a while for it!!!

thanks, lotanna!

Have you still not heard anything from them? I see that someone was recently offered an interview, so maybe there is still hope.

I have withdrawn from Drexel and Mt. Sinai and will be attending Howard in the fall. 😀

Im really excited and looking forward to August. I hear its going to be tough but Im looking forward to the challenge (I was bum in undergrad, time to get my a$$ in gear). Any more new Howard classmates out there?

well i contacted my interviewer, and i still haven't heard anything from anyone at howard - i lost track of how many weeks it has been... the wait continues...

When I went to howard yesterday to turn in my deposit and stuff, I couldnt believe saw people still being interviewed. I think they continue to interview people up until july. So maybe the people who havent heard will hear something when all the interviewing is done.

well, my interviewer finally got back to me! he said the my application was already presented to the admissions committee and that he would check today to make sure that communication is sent out to me....sounds positive right? geez, maybe i'll finally get something in the mail🙄

Bump!!

I wish I can fastforward july!! let me be more realistic...i wish i can get a perscription for a pill that will just knock me out for 40 days...that's be off the hook!

I need to go back to school!

Perseverance is the key for success, I cross my fingers for those who are waiting to hear back from Howard.

I am gonna be a second year this August. I've talked to some of you through PM. I want to wish you all the luck. Howard despite its problems is a solid school. I hope to see you guys next semester.

Just curious as to who else got the email yesterday from Dean Cannon with the orientation schedule. As I was reading through everything I was thinking are they serious with buying all those books before we actually get to school. For me I have yet to recieve my financial aid statement from them and I am going to wait and see what we actually need to buy. To prepare for next month I just plan on reviewing my biochem and anatomy from undergrad. But a friend of mine who just completed her first year at Howard said that whatever I review will probably be covered by the first couple of days. But I have been out of school for a year so I figure that I will use this time to refresh my memory on some things and warm up my brain for school. Also in the letter from the Molecules and Structure block coordinators they said that the schedule for the first two weeks of class was in the email. I only saw the orientation schedule, was I the only one who missed that. I am also curious as to what everyone else is going to do to prepare for school.

Personally I won't read anything before the first day of class....c'mon man..these r the last few days of freedom we have, why skrew them up like that?

The list of books is too long. But it was stated somewhere in the attchments that not all of them are required, and others will be needed for future courses. However, I also think that its a little bit too early to think about that. We're in July...its summer...and the little bit of funds i have left in my account I'd rather spend it to have a good time, and on alcohol (and/or drugz). I'll think about the textbooks when i get my fin. aid check !

She must've forgot to attch the schedule, I didn't recieve it too. Do u have any idea on whats the schedule like for first year students at howard? is it the usual 8-1?

It's a good idea to briefly go over biochem before school starts becuase it has been historically the first bump that discourages Howard first years. Trust me on this one. Just ask all the class of 2006 people.

Thanx medicine2006 for the early warning. From what I've repeatedly heard, biochem has always been one of any med student's worst nightmares.

I believe u are a MS2 now, right? How do u describe the workload of the past yr? I mean how often do u guys get tested, avg number of hours u studied each day? also, what measures did u take/are taking to prepare for the USMLE?

Also, how long did u have to wait to receive your fin aid check? and, finally, what do u think of the school in general in light of the thread posted recently where howard and meharry are labeled as the worse place to study medicine??

We got tested every two weeks on a Friday our first semester of year one. Then once every 3-4 weeks on a Monday during the second semester. My hours of study progresses as the test got closer, for example during the first semester I studied about 3 hours a day for six days for the off week and then studied 7-9 hours a day the week before the exam. During the second semester I'd study about 3-4 hours a day on off weeks and again 7-9 hours the week before. But second semester has Gross so add in a couple hours a night for the lab stuff.

USMLE, I bought some review books but haven't been studying them much this summer. I should get going though.

As far as the school, it teaches you the same thing as Harvard. It's all about your self motivation. People here get good residencies.

While at UNC-Chapel Hill, I met 2 Howard graduates one from the medical school and one from the dental school doing residencies in Surgery and Oral Biology, respectively. Chapel Hill is a top school in both areas so this says a lot to me about the quality of Howard graduates.

Hi everyone - I'm attending the B.S/M.D. program at Howard this fall and hopefully will meet many of you in the next few years.

So, congrats to everyone accepted.

I was also curious if anyone knows someone in the B.S/M.D. Program? I'm sure someones' got to know someone...

If not, no problem, I'm just a bit curious.

Thanks,
Neil

anybody else not receive their financial aid statement yet? I submitted everything a while ago, but the school said something about not being able to view my fafsa. I cant believe that with less than four weeks left until school starts, i still dont know how much money I am going to get from them.

I am feeling you on the financial aid. They sent me my financial aid award notice about a 4 weeks ago saying that I only got $18,500. Of course the cost to go there in the Freshamn budget is like $39,924. So I was having a panic attack thinking how the hell am I going to cover the rest of the costs. So I called them to see what was up and they said that they sent me a generic letter that they just send to everyone initially and that they were still reviewing my application for scholarships and other funds. They came up with 18,500 because that represents the tuition cost. So basically the letter that I got ment nothing because my fininacial aid award hasn't been completed. They said that they would send me another letter, I am thinking the real finiancial award letter, when they were done reviewing my application. But I am not holdiong my breathe on that one. Hopefully everything will be straightened out during orientation week.

How is the freshman budget $39, 924??? Tuition is $18,500 and the room and board budget is $9,500 I think. What is the other $11,000 for?
Anyway, I emailed Dean Cannon once again about my problem and she just got back to me, saying she doesnt know what is happening with my fafsa, but I should be expecting "good news" very soon. Hopefully, Im getting a scholarship. I could use it.
I never got that letter about getting $18,500 either. I think I am just way behind everyone else (everyone except those poor souls I saw being interviewed when I went down there 3 weeks ago)since my application was lost back in December.

well....when i called the financial aid office today i was told that I can come and get my refund check 10 days before class starts or dring the orientation. However, my file is still being reviewed for scholarship and $ht. this is scaring me. I heard from a student over there that last year she received her checks on the FOURTH week after orientation.

well....we have three weeks left to find out what exactly is goin on over there!

c ya'll in DC

Finally, some good news from howard. Im getting a full tuition and fees scholarship!! Im excited as hell!! Med school for free, at a school I am actually excited about going to, I cant believe it.

I got an email from Dean Cannon that talked about the laptops that we are going to get. They look pretty cool. I have never seen on where the screen swivels around like that. You guys should check them out on the Toshiba web site.

Yeah, I looked into the laptops before. I was kind of upset before since I bought a laptop at the beginning of the summer and they said I would still have to pay for the tablet pc anyway. I sold the laptop I bought to my mother (at a discount - it is my mom 🙂 ), so everything worked out. They seem pretty cool. It will be interesting to see what it is like to take notes on the screen like that. I will probably bring a notebook anyway. Anyway, all of this is pretty exciting. Orientation is only about 3 weeks away!

Has anyone else heard from the financial aid office yet??

bump!!!!

at last I received my scholarship letter...it wasn't as exciting as RLMD's but hey...getting $6000 off my loan sum is still something to be thankful for!

Does Howard wait for verified apps from AMCAS before sending out their secondary or will they do it based on preliminary information sent from AMCAS?

Still waiting for verification...and it sucks😡

most school do wait for the verification. I am not sure if howard is one of them, but I didn't hear anything from them until my AMCAS was verified. I know exactly how u feel....its a real pain.

wish u all the best
