Hey everybody- hope that you are all having a fantastic summer, pleasant rotations, etc.

I was curious as to if any of you have applied for, received, or participated in the Howard Hughes program (the year long one) or the NIH Cloister program. I was thinking about applying for these programs (among others).

If you have, let me know! I have a few questions for you.
Thanks,
Mike

I applied and was accepted to HHMI's year long program. I'll let you know how it goes 😉 If you have any questions regarding the application process, let me know.

can you give me the links to these scholarships?

i want to take a year off and do research...

thanks

Hi,

I too am interested in this fellowship. May I ask what year you are and what type of research you intend on doing? I was hoping to apply this January for the following year.

Thanks.

Hey California79-
I just wanted to ask if you were replying to me or to another poster on this thread? (If me--> Will be an MS2/cell cycle-cancer bio interest)
Good luck🙂

UCSFFreak,

Yes, I was replying to you. And thanks for the info. So am I to assume you applied for this fellowship during your first year? Because that is what I am trying to do. Any advice on the application process you can offer is great.

Thanks,
C79

Actually, I will be applying for it either this application cycle (for research between 2nd and 3rd year), or for between 3rd and 4th year. At any rate I am pretty stoked about spending another year in the lab- its pretty rewarding if you can find something to work on that interests you and has some clinical relevance (like the project I am working on for the summer).

I just finished my 2nd year of medical school. The proposal that I wrote for my HHMI grant is based on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). I will be doing some basic bench work -- a little molecular biology and developing some functional assays.

Are there any particular advantages to doing the Howard Hughes program between 2nd and 3rd year as opposed to 3rd and 4th, or vice versa? Just wondering since I'm definitely interested in applying.

Hello .. I did the NIH Cloister program two years ago, and loved it. It's a wonderful experience, and is really worth the year off. You can write back with specific questions.

Hi,

I was wondering, can you do this program at any institution, or do they pick the instituion for you?

let's say I belong to school A, can I apply to school B and do it?

For the HHMI research fellows program you can do it at any institution you want....where ever your mentor/PI is at that you'll be working with on your proposal will dictate where you will work.

As for the pros and cons for doing the Cloister program at a particular time, there are some for both. Between 2nd and 3rd year seems like a natural "break in the action" but leaves you starting the most important year of your medical training having forgotten all that "useful" stuff you just crammed in your heads for boards not to mention beginning it with brand new classmates. Going after your 3rd year will give you the advantage of having some clinical experience under your belt which can help put some of the research you may be doing in perspective and also will give you the nice feeling that you only have your 4th year electives to complete when you return...it sucks however, watching all your classmates become MDs and go off to their respective residencies.

if you do it between 2nd and 3rd year, does that give you the entire summer to also prepare for the boards? sorry don't mean to sound like a geek, but I'm burnt out of school, and I'm starting 2nd year this year...I just wanted the added pressure of the boards in the back of my mind, knowing I will have an additional 2 months to study for it?

In terms of forgetting stuff, I plan to review different shelfs and practice in various clinics while I do the research...I just want to live in a different city after 2nd year..and enjoy life a little...I love my classmates, but honestly, could careless if I graduate with them or not....

besides, its not like during 3rd and 4th year, we are still "going to have classes"...everyone is broken up...

although it does make it difficult, pairing up with a complete strainger during 3rd year

This only applies to the Cloister program at NIH:

You can arrive at 4 different times during the summer, the lastest being at the end of August and the earliest being in July. Once there they expect you to live, eat, and breathe research. Clinics, volunteer work etc. are extremely frowned upon...if not allowed.

Hi!

For the Howard Hughes Fellowship (the one year program), is it just basic science research, or can one do translational and/or clinical research?

Thanks!

You can search some of the projects the fellows did in 2002 here:

http://www.hhmi.org/grants/reports/fellows

Just make sure it's set to "medical students" and use the pull-down menu to search by subject. For the most part the projects are basic science and translational

WatchaMaCallit...I tried to answer you but your mailbox was full.

Hammertime, were you a cloister scholar?
As a scholar finishing my year in the cloister program, I must disagree about your assertation that one must "live, eat & breathe research." I spend half a day (sometimes more) a week seeing patients in the clinic, and recently began a clinical research project. Remember "bench to bedside" is the hot paradigm in research and HHMI is subscribing. So whether one is interested in the HHMI-NIH (cloister) program or the research fellows program, translational research is definately possible. One advantage of the cloister program is that once accepted, the NIH is your playground. You can choose whatever mentor you like, in whatever field you are interested, allowing great lattitude in what your project will be (and not having to know this before you arrive).
I know at least 3 people in the program this last year doing clinical/epi type work and many more doing translational type work.

Also, the NIH sponsers a program known as the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) which is modeled after the HHMI program but is focused on clinical reasearch.
Sorry to drag on...

I will be a cloister scholar this year and this is good news to hear that they aren't as strict as I was told by others in allowing clinical endeavors. Is this mainly dependent upon your PI or does this hold for any one who is interested? Was your clinical project within your lab or elsewhere?

I think it is for anyone who is interested but will depend on selecting an appropriate PI. I work with an MD, PhD who spends 2+ days a week in the clinic and I tag along with him (or his fellow). When selecting a lab it was one of the things I was interested in and asked about.
The clinical study is actually a colaboration with another Scholar and is with his PI (a lab I also considered joining).

PM me or email me for more info.

Thanks for the info...I sent you a PM
