Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knew if non-URMs had any realistic chance at Howard. Basically, all of my clinical experience (paid and unpaid) has been in the minority community. I live in DC, I've worked at drug rehab centers, STD clinics, housing projects, etc., so I honestly feel like a school such as Howard (with their commitment to the underserved) is quite ideal for me. However, I'm a white male raised in an affluent suburb. Does anyone know if Howard considers non-URMs seriuosly. Obviously they "consider" all applicants regardless of race but its clearly a traditionally african american school. ANyone recommend anything? Thanks!

I think your chances would be great at howard. Every school strives to diversify its class and howard looks specifically at students who look to practice in underserved communities. If you show such dedication, then I believe you have a great shot. In my opinion, the majority of howard's class are minorities because the school itself is an HBCU. Good luck.

Howard was created at a time when minorities couldn't get into any school , hence it is traditionally URM, but in this day and age this no longer applies and in fact non minorities ARE MINORITIES on a "black" campus and white students can get all the minority student financial aid!! In fact my Physical Chemistry professor who is in his fifties but is white and from Turkey went to Howard for free!!!

Hi there,

You said you live in DC. If you do come over to the college of medicine someday and sit in on a first year class. You will notice that while the undergrad population is 98% African American the medical school itself is about 75% African American. This means that yes; a white male like yourself has a good chance of getting in. I am a first year at HUCM. I can tell you this that they want to diversify their class. Of course the the mission of the school is still to produce black doctors. You can see this in their clinical application and medicine and society classes where the speakers impress upon us the special needs of the African American community. At the interview you are most likely to encounter questions as to why you want to go to Howard. Your motivation for chosing their school is scrutinized more because they don't want to take in people who are not interested in their mission of producing physicians to care for the underserved.
