Has anyone been accepted into Howard OT program? I'm not sure if I want to attend because of Tuition cost and Housing cost. Help?

Is Howard your only choice?

Do you have any connections to the DC area to find housing options?

The other choice is a new OT program which is much cheaper for housing and tuition however the program has a developing accreditation status. Yes I have a family member in the DC area.

Developing accreditation status verses approved really doesn't matter, in my humble opinion.

The developing accreditation status means the program has already jumped thru many hoops and is being monitored by AOTA and will make it the full way. Call them and ask to speak to the office that monitors the programs to answer any questions. Should help put your mind at ease. AOTA would not let them get this far if they think they'll flunk the accreditation process.

I went to a name brand ivy league undergrad and ALL OTs I have asked say that if your goal is to work, no one cares where you went to school, just that you did, passed the exam and have a license. Nobody will care where the degree is from (don't know the answer if you want to go into academics). So this time, I'm selecting for value, not name.

Consider saving yourself money and going for the best priced option. Think about the amount of money each will cost. Teachers just starting new programs will be highly motivated for their students to succeed.

Just my two cents.

hope it helps!

Thanks so much. That was extremely helpful!!

What did you decide, if you feel comfortable sharing?

Any updates? What was your GPA if accepted? Anybody?!

I was also accepted into Howard University. It is not my only option but I really love DC and would love to atttend. Is anyone planning on trying to live off campus?

DC is super expensive and the area around Howard is not the safest. I'd recommend either living right on campus or somewhere else near a metro and commute in.

Remember to watch your total debt!

Hi OTstudent, what were your stats? How was the interview?

Yes it is really expensive! I really don't want to live on campus but it is looking like it may be the safer/cheaper option unless I commute in.

Here are my stats
B.S. degree in Exercise Science
GPA: 3.6
GRE: 1100 overall
Writing portion: 4.5

Observation Hours: 200 total; 100 in outpatient setting under a certified hand therapist.
100 in inpatient with geratric patients.

Extra Curricular: Member of Exercise Science club at Tennessee Tech University, clean up work after Alambama tornadoes, Mission work in Brazil, local work with habitat for humanity

Go for the most affordable cause it's money you have to pay back, and that will count for a lot later.
The school doesn't matter as much jobs just want the degree you know so I would focus on cost!

anyone else interviewed/accepted to Howard? My interview is this week.

I had a phone interview last Thursday. It only lasted about 30 minutes.

My phone interview is this Thursday - what should I expect? Just the typical questions like why OT? Why Howard?

Yes, the normal questions. They asked why OT, what does OT mean to me, why Howard, and gave me two "case" questions. They had a sheet of questions they asked. The woman who interviewed me was very nice and encouraging!

I received my acceptance letter yesterday! 🙂

Congrats you guys!!! Im searching for housing now. Everything is so expensive.

Has anybody gone on Howard University OT Facebook page? I think we need to start a conversation there or start a facebook page for incoming students. I don't think most people know about this forum.

I am also looking for off campus housing which seems cheaper than staying on campus. It is cheaper if you have roommates. The website to look for off campus housing is www.howard.offcampuspartners.com

I looked for a Howard OT facebook page but I couldn't find one...what is the link?

Hi Everyone! I am a little late in responding and have not yet checked out the FB page, but wanted to post on housing. I will attending Howard in the fall for OT and my husband and I rent out our 1 bedroom basement apartment in Hyattsville, MD. About a 15-20 minute drive, but an easy one. Are current tenant is moving out end of July and it will be available, rent is $950 per month, all utilities included, as well as washer dryer access! May be nice to have a study buddy right upstairs, as well as possible car pool?!

Let me know if anyone is interested...I will also try to post on the FB page. Thanks!

I was admitted into the program, I swear to god i cannot contact anyone at this school. I have emailed and call ALL THE TIME, not sure if anyone is ever at the office. Anyone else having trouble with this? its been a bit of an ordeal since iv gotten my acceptance letter.

It's always hard to verbally contact them. I would go up there or try via email depending on what the issue is though.

Hi everyone. I'm actually waiting to hear from Howard universiry for this fall semester. Can anyone tell me about the interview process and how long it took for them to call after you applied?? I'm super nervous

hello, does anyone know the starting salary for a Howard OT graduate?

I also am waiting to hear back from Howard. I had my interview yesterday, just curious as if anyone has already been accepted, and how long it took to hear from the following interview.

Yes several of us have been accepted. I think we may have posted under another forum. For some, it took about a week. But for myself and other we found out within hours via email. So hopefully you'll hear something really soon! 🙂
