Mr.E said:I received an acceptance earlier this week. I'll be going to Howard, too. By the way, where are all of you planning to live?
Pyari07 said:Hey guys! I'll also be attending Howard this fall, and am pretty excited! I have put in an application at the Towers for grad students. It's like a 2 minute walk, plus I thought it was a nice option for first year. The only thing is it runs on a first come first serve basis, so I'm not guaranteed a room until like June/July when they let me know. So, I'm also going to look into places in Maryland. The students recommended that b/c its cheaper. Good luck to u guys, see you in the fall!
NO, the housing apps didn't come with the acceptance. I actually stopped by the Towers to check them out, and filled out an application there. I am also most likely bringing my car. The Towers rates arent that bad, I applied for a 2 bedroom studio which is like $1100 or something I think, im not positive i would have to check the papersmiraclegirll said:Did you get housing apps with your acceptance? I had to call in to request them so hopefully they'll come soon. Will you be bringing a car if you live in Maryland?
acousticasian said:Also, based on Howard's dental school make-up, you forgot another strong correlation: being african-american. It helps.

According to Howard University's website, 78% of the 2004 incoming class for the dental school were underrepresented minorities (blacks, hispanics, native americans, martians....everybody but whites and asians). Its obvious that there isn't a strong n.a., hispanic, or martian contingency at the school, so its safe to assume that most of the students accepted are black.
So on one hand, the school is strongly diverse in the traditional sense b/c there are so many black students. On the other hand, the school is strongly homogeneous from a revisionist standpoint b/c there aren't many white and asian students.
Whether its a causation or correlation relationship, one thing is statistically obvious; it helps to be black when you're applying to Howard.

PanchoVilla said:Im heading to Howard in the fall and Im stoked. Im married and have a child and was wondering if anyone in the same situation has looked at apartments off campus? Also, thier living allowance is not going to cut it. Does anyone know what private loans are available 😱 ?
GPA 3.0
SCI GPA 3.1

Mr.E said:Finally, someone else in with a similar situation. I am also married with children and will be attending Howard in the fall. I'm planning to live some place of campus, so the kids and wife can feel comfortable. I've started looking at place in Maryland, particuarly in Montgomery country and Bell Air. The commute is longer (I think taking a train is part of it) but the communities and schools are better than the one's in the city. I've heard that private loans can supplement the lack of funds offered by the school. Look into Salle Mae or Keybank they offer up to 40,000 a year. You have to have good credit and possibly a co-signer. These loans go directly to you, instead of the school. They also allow one to defer until you are done with school. I'm still looking into this option. PM me if you get any new info. Good luck.
PanchoVilla said:Thanks for the info on the financial aid, Ill have to look into it. Also, are you renting or buying? Im probably going to have to rent for the first year with the hope of getting a good deal on a forclosure of some sort. Ive never even thought of Montgomery or Bell Air, thats something to think about. Do you know the commute time from either place? Apparently driving to school is not an option but with gas prices sky high Im not sure I would even if I could get a parking pass.
RozhonDDS said:once again can you future howard students, please spit your stats. thanx a bunch
Cablindian said:Hello!

miraclegirll said:i called in to request the housing papers last week but haven't gotten them yet. Does anyone know when they are due and what the chances are of getting housing?
TX2thDR said:excellent point, i wonder what percentage of white students (or otherwise) even consider Howard knowing the majority of the student population is black. even still, have they even heard of Howard? truth be told, the ones that do know about Howard probably don't even consider Howard to be an option unless they have below average numbers or have been rejected by the "white schools". as much as I'd like to avoid it... i can see another heated discussion arising.
KOM said:I was going to apply at first because their stats were lower than all the rest. Then I went to their homepage and all the pictures were of african americans and I slowly figured it out.
"White schools..." Haha - Yeah, I think you opened the door on that comment. For those wondering about Howard and it's non-discriminatory selection policy...i say a picture is worth a thousand words...

TX2thDR said:does anyone know if we still are required to buy the laptop even though we already have a relatively new one? i just got one a few months ago. also, what color scrubs are we required to buy? they have certain colors for D1, D2, etc.
miraclegirll said:I think we'll find out about the laptops later b/c we're supposed to get a specific one i think..i think a dell. And i dont think we start wearing scrubs until our second or third year.
