Just wondering for all you neurology residents how training's going. Is it what you thought it would be like? Do you have time for family or a social life outside work? Do you enjoy your patients and who you work with?

How bout attendings? How did you like your training and how are things going in your profession?

I am a MS-3 who is doing a rotation in Neurology and I think I really like it. I've seen a little bit on what private practice might be like, but I don't know much about the training (what the call is like, etc.). I am also concerned about matching neurology. I am a pretty average applicant with some extracuriculars, middle of my class and with a comlex score of 545. Anyone care to share some insight on my chances in Neuro?

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Go ahead and apply widely 🙂

You dont need to be extraordinarily brilliant to get in a good program. At this point in your training, I would worry more about what it is you really want to do then whether or not you can. when there's a will,t here's a way. it's cliche, but it's true. I think neuro is a field that you have to go into with some kind of a mad love or at least a pretty strong interest. I'm still doing my prelim year but the R2s in my program are working their asses off. Sometimes they get consulted just to do fundoscopies.

I would say the work load is probably a little harder than gen IM (this coming for R2s in IM)

Honestly, if I had it to do over again I would not have gone to medical school at all. Residency is brutal. Internship was difficult, PGY2 of neuro is worse. I'm tired of hearing myself say "It will be better next year" only to find each successive year is more difficult than the last. If I had any marketable skill outside of medicine, or had zero debt, I would drop out immediately.

It's fantastic - This year I switched to Neurology after two years of Med-Peds and it's definitely a better environment all around. I do have much more time for nonmedical aspects of life - on either medicine or peds, I'd easily be over 90 hours/week on inpatient months, now it rarely gets above 60. Call has gone from 7 per month to no more than 4. The patients are fascinating, and each one presents a unique puzzle that my clanking coat and I try to elucidate. It's fun, educational and never boring - except maybe spine MRIs in neurorads. 😴

Does your Neurology service at your training program have a consult only service, or do they have their own service? This seems to make a difference on overall resident work load,
