There is not many posts about SCO (Tennessee).

One of the schools that I am interested in is SCO.

Compared to other optometry schools, SCO's website is not that impressive. It looks outdated. Whether that says anything about the school or the quality of education, I don't know. So if you've had experience with SCO, how is it?

Are you SERIOUSLY asking this question?...

Go visit the school, it'll give you the best idea of what it's really like. SCO has excellent facilities! I'm not really sure that comparing websites is a great idea...

Wish I could but I can't afford it.
Did you visit the school? Or are you a current student there?
The comparing the website thing, there's a saying but I forgot exactly how it goes. Applying the saying to this situation, if they are not willing to pay for a more professional looking website design, what does it say about the school. Appearance is everything.
Thanks for the answer JMU.

Anyone know if SCO has a notetaking service like PCO and ICO do?

Also for externship I saw that you do 2 rotations only (maybe I misread?). Don't most other school have at least 3-5 externships?

That's funny you say that mupreopt, because looking at some of the questions that you have been asking on this site, your not coming off really well........... J/K.

I'll be a student in the fall, but I did visit, and I was there again for the interview. I think a good thing to do is find a current student and ask them any questions you have! You can PM me if you want and I'll do my best but like I said, I'm not a student quite yet so I'm not as knowledgeable. 🙂

Also, they do have a notetaking service. From what I understand they have one person for each year take notes and put them online so other students can use them if they need to. It's a work-study position.

I'm a current (and very tired) student... what is it exactly that you want to know.

And I've forwarded your statement about our website to the people who can do something about it. If you didn't want it forwarded, I'm sorry... this is a public forum.

I'm glad you fowarded it. Thanks.
I know that all the schools are accredited but I just wanted to know the quality of education there. Do you feel that you are in a good school and getting a good education?

You really have to visit the campus and explore the facilities. I was choosing between ICO, PCO, and SCO, but once I visited SCO I knew I wanted to go there. The admissions office was MUCH more friendlier than PCO's or ICO's. I even got a Christmas card from SCO when I applied. The little things they do made a difference in my decision. Remember you have to spend 4 years with these people. 🙂

School is hard and challenging but rewarding.

We have a note taking service, and it is not a work study position. It works a bit differently in each class year, but the gist is that we have a coordinator who gets people for about 3-4 classes each semester to take notes. They go back through the audios for each lecture for their assigned class, jot down some more stuff, make it look all nice and pretty (and LOGICAL!), then post it to the Class Notes Service website. You have to pay $$ to get access. All of that money is pooled and then distributed to the note takers for the job well done.

As for externships... we do 2- 4 monthish externships and 1 clinical rotation. It works out pretty well, I hear, and it, supposedly, allows you to get situated at your site and comfortable with your preceptors.

Any other questions, fire away!

Tomorrow I will (hopefully) be certified to give injections upon graduation.

Haha, you know what I did today?
I'll tell you:
1. Got up really early because I had to be in clinic attire for my anterior segment practical (typically don't have to dress up for that lab).
2. Waited around until it was my turn to take my practical.
3. Did a 7 minute examination of the ant. seg (slit lamp stuff) + tonometry with time to spare (go me!). For all the ODs on here, please don't tease me that 7 minutes is forever... I know it is, and it will be much shorter when I get into the clinic in May... or not).
4. Changed out of clinic attire because in posterior segment lab we were doing IV injections. Tennessee is licensed to give injections (we did IM and SQ last week), so we do them in lab. Injections were so much fun (although a tad painful), and IVs were especially great. The staff docs were really patient with a couple of students who freaked out, or passed out, and it was definitely an amazing experience.
5. Ate a really good lunch.
6. 3 Classes: Theory & Methods, where we talked about real cases and whatnot; Anterior Seg, where we learned all about pingueculas and pterygiums (the class is 4 days a week and we cover at least 10 things a day); and Pharm, where we were talking about... drugs... (I was tired, so sue me).
7. I came home and started studying for the injections test we have tomorrow. Sort of. I took most of the day off. Today was long and draining and completely worth ever $ of my borrowed tuition money.

My class learned a lot of stuff today. So much that I can barely remember it, which brings me to the point of this long drawn out monologue: YOU HAVE TO STUDY OTHERWISE YOUR "EDUCATION" MEANS DIDDLY SQUAT! It doesn't matter if you go to IAUPR, Pacific, SCO, or SUNY. If you don't study, you aren't going to learn the material. Yes, my education is great. Yes, SCO is a great value. Yes, SCO is a good, no, GREAT school. But remember, it means nothing unless you put forth effort.

PS- I have friends at EVERY optometry school and I can honestly say you'll get a good education wherever you go. SCO's is just a tad superior. I crack myself up!

I will be an entering student at SCO this fall and just had to say something! SCO has the BEST clinic environment of any school I visited. It is far from being out-dated. It is HUGE and There are so many specialty areas in optometry and you will have a chance to actually engage in those different areas in the clinic. All in all very modern and impressive! I loved my visit to SCO and can't imagine being happier anywhere else! Also just wanted to emphasize that you can get audio recordings of all lectures as well as the notes!

Are you going to get a work study job this summer or are you going to be arriving in August?

PS: I enjoy your enthusiasm a lot! And we do have a great clinic.
