I've searched the forums, but not much people have commented about UK. I'm from nyc and I'm worried that lexington might be too suburb-like. What do you like or dislike about the school and the location? any feedback will be deeply appreciated.

thanks

I'm fininshing my first year at UKCD on 30 June, so I should be able to help a little. To begin, Lexington is a nice city. Low crime, clean, beautiful scenery, and friendly people (even friendlier in the neighboring counties), but after school activities are limited. If having a myriad of things to do after class is what you need, Lexington will get boring fairly quickly. However, Lexington is one corner of what we call the golden triangle. Cincinnati and Louisville are both short drives. Each has a number of other things to do that make the area very nice.

Now for the school.
I'm really enjoying myself. The faculty is great (with a few exceptions). They all treat the students as colleagues and want you to become a great dentist. My class has had a wonderful comeraderie with each other and with the other classes. The facilities are varied. Some old stuff (our student lounge sucks) and some new (nice operatories). A new school is being built, but will not be complete by the time I graduate. The class size here is about 56. They've tinkered with the curriculum a bit to get us in the clinic by Sept. The current DS II's did not get patients until this spring. I do not know what UKCD's board score ranking is, but I do not care. I cannot imagine finding a place I'd enjoy more.

Sorry if I sound like someone on the admission staff, but I really am having a blast.

Any specific questions, just ask.

I graduated in 05 from UK. It was great. Toward the end of 3rd year and all of 4th year we were going out to happy hour with our faculty every friday. They are so down to earth and really treat you like equals. Keeneland and Home football games are awesome especially when they happen on the same day. You have to invite friends/family to town for one of these weekends. It is not a city it is a town!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just remember that and you will be ok. The traffic is bad. Bars stay open til 2:30. no liquor sales on sunday. The university is the town. They have some good places to eat and some fair golf courses. It is a different pace than you are used to in ny. There is a lot of money in the town thanks to all the horses. Hope this helped if you have any specific questions let me know.

I just moved to Lexington from Indianapolis last month to begin dental school at UK in a few weeks. As far as my impressions thus far...Lexington and UK are much smaller and much friendlier than I'm used to. It's kind of refreshing. I will move back to a larger city after graduation, but for me Lexington is a good, small environment through which to survive dental school. I tend to have trouble focusing in school if I'm in a larger city with too many shopping and night life options. I haven't yet spoken to a single UK dental student who is not happy here. Traffic is much more hectic than Indianapolis, and the stop lights are SO SLOW!!!!! It really depends how you want your dental school experience to be. If you want a smaller environment where you get to know your professors and peers real well, than UK is a great school for you! No PBL learning, no personal laptops, collecting teeth is laid back, great facilities, very nice faculty and students. I didn't find that everywhere! Good Luck!

I'm glad to hear these positive comments about UK. I have applied for dental school in the 2007 cycle, and UK was one of my designated schools. I have spent this summer in Louisville at the medical and dental schools and LOVE it. I'm glad to hear that UK is a good place to be, also.
