I was just wondering if anyone has used (or knows anyone that has used) the new HP Touchsmart Laptop? I have to get a new laptop for pharmacy school and thought that this might be a good way to go. They aren't that expensive (only about $1100.00), but I wonder about how well the touchscreen features work and if their are any bugs or problems with them. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

My brother owns the tx2500 version. Its more of a little brother to the new HP multitouch tablet. If you want a school/multimedia, then this is a good choice. The specs for a tablet is amazing; however, there are some cons.

This is heavy considering it's a 12.1" and ultraportability purposes. If you plan on lugging it around all day for classes, expect to bring along a charger or 2nd battery. The battery does not last long ~2-3 max (assuming same cell battery), maybe more if you play around with the settings. Overall, good all around tablet. But I wouldn't get it.

I'm looking at the Dell Latitude xt2! It would be an amazing tablet for school purposes and would expect to last the full 4 years. Biggest draw for me is the long battery life. I suppose netbook can do the job also such as the Samsung NC10 SE ~9hrs.

I can't recommend an HP to anyone after my experiences with this HP laptop. The wireless breaks, the hinges come undone, and sundry other annoyances make me want to encourage people NOT to get an HP. also see www.hplies.com

Thanks. What do you think of Sony laptops...or what brand do you like and why?

I've never once heard a good comment about sony computers or laptops. They're extremely overpriced too. Most of my friends have had dell laptops for many years, and never really had a problem with them. I'm in the market for a laptop too. I have a new HP desktop which I love, but I haven't heard too much about their laptops. I think you're going to hear something negative about every single company.

Go to cnet.com

That is the best place to read up on products and see detailed reviews.

i wouldn't just look at that hp website and take their word for it, it's probably all the worst comments compiled into 1 website. Just avoid it.

why do you want a touch screen? personally i think a 500$ laptop would be more than enough for school.

i've owned a dell: good laptops, i haven't had trouble with it after 3 years of regular use.

hp makes good laptops
sony makes overpriced laptops
toshiba and acer.......idk enough about these

I'm also in the market for a new laptop. I'm finally retiring my dell after 5yrs of solid and constant use. I'm waiting till July to buy though. I've heard you can get a free upgrade to windows 7 if you buy after july 1st. CNET is a good place to check on laptops too as already mentioned

How do you guys feel about windows vista? I was thinking about waiting to get a new computer or maybe getting a refurbished one because I've heard a lot of negative things about vista. Does anyone have experience with vista or helpful opinions? thanks 🙂

U should definitely get an hp . I just recently got a hp pavilion laptop and we already had a hp desktop, but our toshiba laptop was overheating. I've done some research and was also debating over hp, sony or dell but hp definitely won me over because they r very good looking computers: better quality then dell but not overpriced like sonys. The man helping me told me they get more dells brought back for repair then hps. Dell may be cheap 400-500 comp. But hp will last longer.

Also I have not had any bad experience with vista its really nice and easy to use.

What about an apple? I'm not one of those people who claims Apple's are the best thing in the world but I really like mine. I used to have a Dell and it was decent for about 5 years then completely went to crap. Right now I just have the basic macbook.

Five Years is a LONG time in terms of notebook life span. Many people, I would assume, upgrade their gadgets every 2 years to keep in line with the advances in the technology. Mac are cools, and that's it. I used windows PC and mac during my undergrad. They're quite annoying to work with. Heck, I use one if it were a gift, but would not buy one anytime soon. My biggest gripe with Apple is that the price tag. A $1500 Apple notebook is the same as a 500-700$ windows notebook when comparing the specification. You want a MacBook Air? Look at the Dell Adamo, or if you got the cash, go for a Dell Latitude XT2, it would surely last the 4 years!

also consider this:
most pharmacy student do not use a laptop during school, there is just no need or room for it. So it's unlikely that you'll be lugging one to school. For computing, a desktop might be a cheaper/more powerful way to go.

thinkpad is always the right way to go.

Use caution when giving blanket statements - the laptop/PC requirement varies greatly by school. At my school - a Laptop is REQUIRED, is used every single day, and mandatory for sitting of all exams.

Contact the school in question for specific guidance on requirements.

IMO = a tablet has VERY useful abilities in pharmacy school - especially for Med chem and biochem. The ability to draw structures in your word documents or powerpoints made my group's typed notes some of the most popular in the class...

I just saw the dell adamo today. It is beautiful and pricey, with just reasonable specs. I'm definitely not spending $1999 on a 13inch laptop. I'll be looking for a dell xps when i'm ready to buy.

I love my macbook.
I've been a PC fan forever, but went mac due to my hatred of Vista.
They offer student discounts for most schools (I purchased mine for ~900 AND got a free ipod) and I love the operating system.

I know mac is cool and trendy, but the macbooks are really nice.

i use vista everyday, and i don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a good system. If you're worried, wait till sometime next year when windows 7 is released.
