Hello all-
2nd yr HPSP student here. my wife is a 3rd yr HPSP student. we will be moving to Portsmouth, VA area in August. She will be in San Diego for a rotation at the Navy hospital in August also (I get to do all the moving). I have a ADT time i need to use this fiscal year (school orders).
Would there be an advantage to doing my ADT during August? I'm thinking in terms of help with moving, flying to visit her, separation pay, etc?
Thanks for the help. Time to put out the NavyFP bat signal. :eyebrow:

Sure, you could use school orders to do some of those things. The disadvantage would be that you would be using the time most people take to study for and take boards and filling it with other stuff (moving, vacation, whatever). If you can work it out with your schedule to take boards before you do all this, then go ahead and do it.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by, "help with moving?"

You wont be getting separation pay. You only get that if you are on orders for >30 days and the orders are written so you get just over 4 weeks but < the 30 days required. The rest of your 45 days are school orders.

Good Luck 🙂

Sorry, brain said I answered, I guess I did not. Pesky brain.

I am confused. If she is a third year, why are you moving this summer?

As for orders, if you are on school orders you are supposed to be in the area of your school. I am guessing school is not in San Diego, so you would be outside the magic bubble if you travel to where she is.

You get sep pay if the Navy sends you away from home and you leave the family behind. You don't get it if the Navy sends your spouse away and you stay at home. School orders imply home, so no sep pay. For her, she has to be away for more than 30 days to qualify for sep pay. The travel order portion of most AT orders is 28-29, so no sep pay for her either.

we're moving this summer (after I take boards) b/c I'll be doing all of my 3rd year rotations in/around Portsmouth (assigned by the school) and she will be doing most if not all of her 4th year rotations there too.

so the consensus is that there would be no reason to do ADT at that time then? no reimbursement for moving or traveling expenses? nada? and the Navy may even get confused/angry that I'm not actually at the physical school building for my "school orders" even though I'm where the school sent me. does that about sum it up?

and NavyFP- since it took you 3 days to respond, you have now moved down 3 notches in my book. However, that still keeps you at the top of the list. but i hope you feel ashamed. :slap:

No, no reimbursements and if your school sends you there. You are supposed to be there and the Navy won't care.

Duly scolded. 😀
