I have tried everywhere to find the answer to this question, and I'm wondering if any prior military out there know: Can you accept the HPSP scholarship and also use your MGIB benefits at the same time? Is anyone doing it? I've been given two different answers and don't know what's right. I'm trying to budget for next year, have family considerations, etc. Appreciate the help.

This is not really an official answer, but common sense would say yes. Then again, common sense doesn't always apply to the military.

The MGIB is something you payed for and that is payed directly to you when you use it. It is also not considered finacial aid in a traditional sense. I know you are eligable for other student loans, scholarships, and grants while using it so I would only assume you could use both HPSP and MGIB at the same time.

I am going to be in the same situation so if you hear otherwise, please post it on here!

MGIB is a VA benefit, paid-for by a qualifying servicemember. You should be able to collect if you are enrolled in a qualifying program; medical school ought to qualify.

HPSP is not VA-affiliated or funded.

You should be eligible for each together.

I will let you know if I hear anything. I've called the VA, who couldn't give me an answer either, so I sent a question to their website a week ago. NMETC also didn't know. I'm going to file the paperwork and then wait to find out. Thanks for the responses.

I used my MGIB during my entire last 3 years of medical school while on HPSP and had 2 other classmates doing the same. This was just several years ago and I don't think it has changed.

👍

Thank You!!!!!!🙂 🙂 🙂

I don't have prior service in the military, but I am HPSP. When I start active duty, and if I pay for the MGIB, can I use the MGIB to pay for a residency after I leave the service?

I'm HPSP and prior military, but an officer. The first paperwork we had to sign and the academy was giving up an MGBI benefits. I don't know the answer to your question, find an officer recruiter spefically in charge of recruting medical officers. If they don't know, subtly suggest that they find out and let you know, you can always hook them in with I'm strongly considering pursuing the HPSP program, but I have a question about this. When they give you an answer, get the source, cause we all know, well, recruiters are lawyers, on some level in another alternate reality it may be true. MGBI isn't going to fully cover your med school last time I checked, but I have no dog in the game. Best of luck.

If you'll notice, my post to this thread revived it from a nearly four month stand still. Tell me, how could I have found this post without using the search button at the top of the screen???????? I guess I'm a magical doctor. I may be lazy to search all the posts. I'll give you that. But your comment is both useless and worn out.
