More than likely you will be wait-listed and offered a 3 yr scholarship in the fall.

Make sure that you stay in touch with your recruiter throughout your enrollment in dental school. As people drop out or don't take scholarships, you need to keep your name up there in case a 4-year becomes available.

Second, contact the recruiter who covers your dental school if it's not the same person you've already been working with. If it's the same person you are fine. Make sure they know who you are and that you still want a 4-year.

I have never heard of a 3.5 year scholarship, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

KRMOWER is right, you will likely be offered a 3-year in the Fall, somewhere around the start of the new Fiscal Year (FY), which is OCT 1.

Good luck!

there is are 3.5 yr scholarships. they apply to people who applied in the late fall semester of their 1st yr in d school. it's pretty much same as 4yr one in terms of benefits and obligations, except you missed one semester's worth of tuition, stipend, etc.

from my class, 3.5 year was actually pretty easy to obtain.

im in 4 year hpsp but 2 of my classmates are in 3.5 hpsp and both took 20k sign-up bonus and are going to stay for 4 years of service.

army will reimburse for equipment but you will have to pay for first trimester tuition (since usc is trimester system, 3.5 scholarship is actually 3.75 scholarship and you end up paying about 20k+ for first trimester tuition but you can also receive 20k bonus if you want to pay back 4 years)

either way congrats on getting into school and you will love usc (esp. being in the army, it's the best thing)

Does anyone know how a 3.5yr HPSP will work on the quarter system?

Say your school starts in late-September. And you get approved for a 3.5yr HPSP in October (FY2012). Do you commission in October and get paid right away?

Hey man! just wanted to give a shout out from USC class of 2013, Navy here. Being on HPSP at USC is soooooooo sweeeeet. Yes 3.5 year scholarship exist. How do I know this? I have one! 🙂

The take home message for Army is:

3.5 yr HPSP do happen, but the Army is in no way obligated to offer them each year. There is no guarantee it will be offered. If you get it - consider yourself lucky - if you don't - do not consider yourself getting screwed out of something you deserved. It was never guaranteed in the first place - you won't know until October of each year what they will do. Cross your fingers.

Army update. Been waitlisted. Hopefully that list moves 🙁

Oh, they're out of 4 year HPSPs. Apparently there is a slight chance those who received it will not sign (due to various reasons: military lifestyle, family, etc), so the list might move.

But if it doesn't, then we're going to have to wait til October and hopefully be offered a 3.5yr.

Unless you're specifically asking why I didn't get it. If that's the case then it's because I applied super late.

Yeah that's why I was asking. I applied late too. Bummer since, if you're going to do it, the 4yr makes the most sense.

4 yr is the best, but the 3 yr is not shabby either.

I would not take the $20k bonus with the 3 yr though (unless they offerred you a 3.5 yr HPSP - then I would for an extra 6 months).

The 1 yr loan repayment, opportunity to take specialty bonuses sooner, or chance to get out and go into private practice will pay more than the $20k and 1 yr obligation for the 3 yr HPSP w/ $20k bonus and 4 yr obligation.

Got notified a few days ago that I got a 4 year HPSP. Signed the paperwork and commissioned yesterday.

The waitlist is moving 🙂

Army.

Navy is done this year (trust me, I called/emailed several times). Army 4 year HPSP was offered and was a sure thing so I jumped on it. With the Navy, the earliest you will know is October 1st, it's not guaranteed, and you will probably get a 3.5 year. Army was too good to pass up.

Good luck with the Navy though!

Thanks man, I was offered the Navy Collegiate scholarship but it doesn't pan out financially for me so I told them I would wait and see if anything opened up in Oct. I also applied with the Army to get on their merit list and see if anything popped up. After reading krmowers blog I am definitely down with the Army as well. I am on the Army order of merit list but I don't think i'll see anything until Oct.

Hey spc213!
I'm in ASDOH 2015. And have applied for the HPSP, but also put on the Order of Merit List. when you were here, did you do basic officer training your first Summer, after your boards? Also, any suggestions about the HPSP , ASDOH or the merit list?
