HPSP awards

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats. Are they sending you to OBC this summer? Please let me know when you find out specifics. So far, no one has been able to answer how BAH is calculated. Check your orders thoroughly - make sure they include $2 /day for laundry, or whatever the current rate is. If they fly you to Houston, make sure your orders allow for a rental car and make sure you get in and around mileage.

Thanks guys,
I dont start officer training until next summer (2012), however at this point we are just waiting for my senate approval to become a comissioned officer. Nothing really happens (except more paper work) until august when I start my second year and I begin to get the benefits of the scholarship (tuition, monthly stipend....). Im stoked the chance of becoming a military vet was one of the main reasons I applied to vet school.

Cry- I am going to be a first year next year and this is something I've been looking at for awhile. Who did you talk to/what kind of stuff did you do to make a competitive applicant? Was there anywhere you got advice or any advice you have?

Breeztye- you will become best friends with your recruiter, the application is lengthy and you will also have to pass the physical exam at one of the army stations. As far as application advice: I was told they look at previous military service (which i did not have), experience shadowing with a military vet (which i did not have), extensive leadership experience since you will be put immediately in charge of other people after you graduate (which I did have), a high class rank (which I did have), good letters of rec (which I did have), GRE, Undergrade grades ect................ The list goes on but I was told the highest priority went to military experience, leadership and grades.
good luck to you.

Oh yea, they only offered 18 three year scholarships this year across the country so take your time on the application!

Thanks for this info. That's what I like to hear. Got the first three covered in depth. Now I just need to do well the first semester.

Hey all,
I was just awarded the army 3 year scholarship, anyone else hear some good news?

What school do you attend, or more specifically, what district is your recruiter covering? I've been in touch with mine every few days and he's saying the selection board results have yet to be released. Not sure WTH is up with only certain districts having the list.

Im on the west coast. Everyone else at my school has also gotten their results and I have already recieved further HPSP paperwork regarding my contract (at this point im just waiting for my name on the senate "scroll" to be approved so I can be commissioned) I wonder whats up with your district, I thought the board met in the beginning of april to review everyones application across the country. Anyways good luck.

Thanks for the info. Board dates were same as yours. I'll be on the phone again tomorrow. It was a long shot for me this cycle anyhow, but he could at least do me the courtesy of giving me an answer! Assuming of course it isn't due to some hold-up in the email food chain.

Well, I'm OML. Here's to hoping someone backs out or they magically find more money, otherwise I'll be playing this game next year.

Congrats on getting a slot Cry!

thanks,
do you know your ranking? I know a couple people from my school are on the OML as well. I think somewhere on sdn there is an old thread where some girl got off the OML in Aug do to an increase in funding?

Hi all,
This is my first post after lingering around here for a few weeks. I am going to College in the fall, and will be majoring in Biology. I am the son of a Naval Officer and spend the majority of my life overseas. I will be doing ROTC in college, but will not be taking their scholarship. I am hoping this shows my commitment to serve.

Any other tips on making myself the best possible candidate for this scholarship?

I sent you a PM, but if you intend to continue ROTC beyond the second year, you'd do well to take the scholarship. I don't know what the stipend is these days, but every little bit helps, unless you are using your parent's Post-911 GI Bill, which is a much better deal. Army ROTC might be a good thing for you to take the first two years, mostly just to get a taste of the Army experience. Just remember it's merely a taste - like the little bit of pizza on a toothpick in the grocery store. Taking or leaving the money isn't going to have any reflection on willingness to serve. It's just a baited hook and a way to get ahead in your financial career. Lots of LTs out there who get themselves in financial trouble in their first year. Not having college debt helps out. I forgot to ask if you were planning on an active duty career or wanted reserves. I tend to default to the Regular Army component and forget about the rest, but not everyone has the same plans. If reserves is your goal, then take the money and stay the 4 years. If you don't get into school at the end, you can keep applying, unless they decide to deploy you, in which case you have a year to save money and work on your application.

I'd go the Active Duty route. I need to mention that I do not need the ROTC scholarship. My Undergrad would be paid for completely by the GI Bill and Academic Scholarships.

Make sure your dad looks into the rules for transferring it to you before he retires. Right now, I believe you have to do another 2 years of service after you request the transfer. We have a first sergeant in that situation right now. He's at the 22 year mark and now might be hanging out for 24.

I heard that I'm OML. For me, its not so bad. It would have been nice to get the scholarship, but I have enough options all around that I'm ok with not getting it too. If I don't come off the list (which probably will not happen, esp with the state of our country's economey) I will not reapply next year. I made the decision early on that I was ok with even work for even repayment and 5 years reserve, but not 3 years of active duty and 5 years reserve for 2 years of school being paid for.

There was a lot that went into that decision, but its the one I came to. Good luck to everyone else!

I'd actually prefer serving for more time. I get to see more of the world. 😀

Congratulations Scottdu,

Hey armymutt-I am not a small animal person in the least (unless it involves working dogs) and would much rather spend my time with inspection or being involved in other things (even doing paperwork then working on cats). Personally, I would like to deploy and use my education to support other soldiers... I know you have done at least one tour would you mind sharing your experience with the vets overseas. Anyways I get commissioned on Tuesday cant wait.
