I was looking through different Army residencies and was wondering about how residency training can affect my 4-year obligation from medical school. I will give the Madigan General Surgery Residency as an example of a situation that confuses me. Here's my understanding of it:

PGY-1 (internship, no added obligation)
PGY-2-5 (residency training of 4 years, maintain 4-year obligation)
PGY-R (research year b/w PGY-2 and PGY-3, does this add a year for a total 5-year obligation post-residency?)

Any insight into different situations that change your payback time would be appreciated.

Yes.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum. Please do a search.

You incur an ADSO of a year for every year of post-internship training. You owe the larger of the ADSOs between school and post-internship training. If your training is interrupted (GMO or utilization tour before fellowship), then that changes your numbers a bit.

Thanks. I'll look around for other examples.
