I am completely new to the HPSP world and am interested in how the residency programs work. I heard from someone that you cannot apply to a residency as an HPSP recipient until you pay back your years. Is this true? Also, is it permitted to go into, say, an OMFS residency right out of school? Also, is it the same type of application process when doing an OMFS residency through the military compared to civ? I know the numbers of seats are much less in the military omfs world, but is it more competitive regardless of the higher percentage of admittance? I'm very interested in how residency programs work with hpsp so please help out a little! Thanks a lot!

The Army, as well as the other branches, allow you to apply to various military residencies during your fourth year of dental school. Depending on the needs of whichever branch you happen you be in, you may be allowed to apply to a civilian program after the military selection board reviews your application and gives you the green light.
