Hello fellow SDNers,
Long time lurker, recently decided to be a bit more active in the community.

I'm a prior service, recently got an acceptance to a D.O. school, and waiting to hear from a few more.

I just had a few questions that I was wondering I could get some answers to (I tried the search function but was unable to get clear answers)

1) I understand the residency selection is supposed to be based off a point system, with higher board scores equating to higher points. What are any other parameters that contribute to more points?
Would my prior service allow me more points in the system? (I'm reserve but have been activated some time stateside and deployed overseas as well)
Also, are points really the only factor when selecting a candidate? Is there some kind of an interview process as well?
Would the military rotation site be the biggest factor in residency selection?
Also, will the school I am attending bear anything on the decision? (i.e. will they look down on me for attending a newer D.O. school as opposed to a more longer established D.O. school?)
If someone could point me to some grand guide that breaks the residency selection process that I maybe couldn't find, that would be awesome...

2) In my initial meeting with the recruiter, I was informed that a major advantage of the Army hpsp over the others was that there was no interim year (fygme, flight surgeon, etc) and that I would most likely get straight into residency training.
I just wanted to confirm this was correct? or if I misunderstood him in any way..? Was my recruiter just talking about the army not having gmo tours? (I feel like I may be misunderstanding something here...)

Thanks in advance...

You get points for board scores, grades, rec letters, and your interview. You can also get bonus points for prior service and publications. For people who are applying to residency after some time away from medical school, they will get points for their internship, utilization tour (e.g., GMO), and residency (if they are applying for a fellowship).

The Army absolutely uses GMO tours. The only difference between the Army and Air Force/Navy is at the Army lets its doctors go straight to residency and then forces them to work as general medical officers.
