I’m 32, and my husband is currently doing his postdoc after completing his PhD. We are planning to start a family and he is planning to apply for jobs in a year.
I did my undergrad in Automotive and Technology Management and started my career as a consultant. Over time, I moved into an HRIS manager role—but the unfulfilled desire to find real purpose has always stayed with me.
I tried exploring different paths—like applying for an MBA and learning data analytics—but deep down, my heart has always been drawn to medicine. For years, my inner voice kept saying “med school,” even when I ignored it for practicality or financial reasons.

I’ve worked for stability and money all my life, but now I want to work for purpose. I’m planning to make a big career change—from HRIS management to medicine. Am I crazy for wanting this, or is anyone else out there in a similar boat?

I was able to retire from corporate life a few years ago and the call back to medicine has led me to applying this cycle.

There are plenty of us out there, but we are definitely the less vocal minority. Your experience, maturity, and worldliness will pay dividends in your efforts.

I’m an HR leader at a global tech company. Been doing very well with financial stability. Now at 38 with 2 kids looking to go to med school for purpose also. Starting post bacc in January. My stats are horrible but my advisor said it’s doable. I figured it’s worth a shot. There’s plenty of us out there. Wishing you the best!

I’ve been questioning my abilities lately and feeling a bit tired and disengaged in my current role, so hearing your story is really encouraging.
