how do i find out my personal optimal way to study? do schools usually have somebody that can help you with this (i'm not talking about tutors)?

i know i can pwn college, i just need the dedication to the studying environment (i've previously diagnosed myself with mild ADD 😀 ), and I know that if I found MY PERSONAL optimal study zone, it would just make things easier.

so, should i ..... i dunno.... wear some flippers and some black spandex? will that help me?

i know i can figure it out, but what do i do? there has to be somebody that knows different ways to study, and that would at least give me some sort of window to narrow it down.

Hi,

I know how you feel. I had a class years ago that gave some suggestions.

1. First find a time that is best. I know I have to fit studying in when I can, but morning time is set aside for more intense.

2. I then found out that I do better if I see and hear while studiing. So it was suggested to read into a recorder and listen to it back at least 2 times while following along.

I hope this helps!

The truth is it is different for everyone. Wait until classes start and see how it goes. I know that over the course of M1 I changed the way I studied. The one thing that I do know is that you have to stay on top of it. I worked 20-25 hrs a week during M1. I studied 2-3 hrs per day and longer on the weekend (of course many hours days before exams). The key is to be consistant, it is ok to blow off a day to go out with friends or go ski but you just have to be dedicated there is just way too much to cram.

I started the year by making flash cards but by the time biochem came around there just wasn't time. I used charts and a lot of electronic material our med school has on the web. I would strongly recommend web path for pathology. It is really a learning process to find what works for you, some people love to study in groups, I just don't get much out of it. Good luck!

If you know that you can pwn college, then your study habits must already be pretty optimal.

So you've diagnosed yourself with ADD? To be diagnosing things you must already be a doctor so why post in pre-allo.

Flippers and black spandex are ok but you may prefer a G-string.

I think the best thing to do is experiment with different methods. I found that I have used different methods for different classes, for biochem I wrote out the pathways from memory lots of times to get all the steps where for genetics I did tons of problems, and embryo I read the book and my notes. Point being that some material requires different methods to learn it for different people. Also staying on top of things is suppose to be really helpful. I never was able to in college ( I am a huge procrastinator) but I am going to try and keep up this year. Some people also swear by the preview, view, and review method. Best of luck.

I only have ADD when I am studying, surprisingly, it goes away when I am watching TV...hmm... 😕

Go to your school's academic skills center (or possibly the tutor center) and ask them if you can take a learning styles test. This will tell you what type of a learner you are (visual, auditory...). There are study suggestions for each type of learner.
