My son did close to 60 hours of shadowing during HS (he applied for BSMD) and close to 40 hrs during last 2 years while in college. Can he show HS hours or redo those (various specialities) ?
He could refer to his HS shadowing as part of his "path to medicine" in his Primary Statement, but should leave it out of his Activities section. If he has 50 hours of shadowing listed, he will be bout average among applicants. If he has no primary care shadowing, he should add another physician to his list, but it wouldn't be necessary to "redo" a lot of specialists. My son did close to 60 hours of shadowing during HS (he applied for BSMD) and close to 40 hrs during last 2 years while in college. He should augment his college shadowing experience with at least 10 hours of shadowing of primary care physicians (general pediatrics, outpatient general medicine, family medicine). He hasn't done any primary care yet. He volunteers at a free clinic and also at children's hospital.
Is shadowing a pediatrician and IM physician 2 days each (8 hrs/day) sufficient? that's what he did with all the specialists (various surgeons) during breaks in home town.He should augment his college shadowing experience with at least 10 hours of shadowing of primary care physicians (general pediatrics, outpatient general medicine, family medicine).
He should leave the HS shadowing off of his medical school application (it got him into college, but adcoms want to see what he has done lately).
Yes. Those hours, plus the 40 hours from the last two years, will be more than solid. Is shadowing a pediatrician and IM physician 2 days each (8 hrs/day) sufficient? that's what he did with all the specialists (various surgeons) during breaks in home town.
