i searched for a thread but couldn't find one with much information, and i also checked their website but they don't have specific information regarding admission, so..

What is HST program? From what I learned so far, it's a joint program between Harvard and MIT. It incorporates heavy math and engineering.

Do you apply to this program through AMCAS, with Harvard Medican School? How competitive is this program. Any numbers you know?

HST is an MD pathway offered through Harvard and M.I.T. and enrolls 30 students per year. Because of the low number of student slots available, the program is very competitive/hard to get into (compared with 135 student slots for the regular pathway).

are we talking about the average GPA of 3.85+ and MCAT 37+?

You apply to Harvard through AMCAS and HST through their secondary. You can apply to HST, New Pathway, or both, and they decide which to interview you for (or both). The New Pathway interview is fairly standard, but for HST you get grilled by a panel of doctors and students. If you really like research and pure science, definitely apply to HST, but it is very tough to get into and has several requirements over the typical medical school's.

Usually those accepted have GPA's of 7.0+ and MCAT's in the 80's.

no way.. only Chuck Norris gets that kind of numbers

..Jokes aside, anyone know some specific numbers I can compare to? I would like to know if I have even the slimmest chance.

johnnydramma: Which option do I pick in AMCAS? Combined medical / PhD? or Other degree?

You can apply to HST for MD or MD/Ph.D. You're probably talking about the MD option, so just choose that. Harvard must have lazy IT people (people have been able to find out if they are accepted or not for 3 years in a row because of a financial aid glitch), so all the links from last cycle probably still work and you can check out the secondary now. You will need to write an extra essay for why you want to get into the program, aside from that it's the same as the NP secondary.

MSAR lists the overall GPA median for the NP pathway as 3.87, BCPM GPA median 3.85, and MCAT 11 V, 12 P, 12 B, R for the accepted applicants for 2006. Since you will be applying for something more competitive than the NP pathway, I would assume you should have at least those numbers.

The main criteria is probably research. Having a 4.0 & 40 would help too. The people I know who got in have tended to be the ones who won lots of research money in undergrad scholarships.

I had higher numbers and I didn't get in...

Its a great program if you love basic science and research. I am interested in neuroimaging so HMS and MGH would have provided me a good place to do research in that field, alas I will remain in Dixie for another 4 years🙂.

You have to be cream of the crop to get into HST though. I was really honored just to interview at the program. You definitely need to be able to show why you want to hold a commitment to doing research during med school.

i guess i'm trying to join the NBA from the junior varsity team in a small high school

the main reason i read about the HST program is that it required advanced mathematic background, and i read engineering in the description somewhere

To apply to HST do you need to write the separate MD/phd essay in the AMCAS application?

I am assuming you don't have to if you can be an MD-only student in HST. Can someone please confirm?

yes, i'll confirm that. lots of HST students are dual degree, though.
