Would taking human anatomy and/or physiology be a good idea? It is not required for the school I plan on applying to. The school I will be attending doesn't offer the joint course, so I would have to take them individually. Should anatomy be taken before physiology? Does the order even matter?

I am planning on taking a fusion class of Anatomy and Physiology, which is lower division and has a lab.

The university I'm applying to requires anatomy with a lab, and physiology with a lab.

However, on their pharmcas page it says a full year of the fusion class can satisfy the anatomy with lab requirement, but not the physiology. So I have to take the physiology course with its own lab separately.

I couldn't really answer which one should be taken first, since I will be studying both at the same time.

I figure a lot of schools require anatomy for a reason. It can't hurt using this logic.

It probably depends on how the class is structured on which one you should take first. Maybe ask a counselor. I know at my school taking anatomy first was the way to go so you would know all the parts before trying to apply the knowledge. The professors expected you to know all the anatomy stuff for physio.

If the school you are applying to doesn't require it, then they will teach you everything you need to know in pharm school. However, it could make pharm anatomy easier if you know some especially if you are good at remembering long-term. The PCAT also has a few A&P questions on it, but nothing that you really need to take the whole set for.

thanks! anyone else have any advice?

I'm in the second semester of A&P right now and I've found it interesting (the physiology more than the anatomy). If you have a choice, I would definitely recommend taking physio over anatomy. As a pharmacist it's more relevent to know how the organ systems work rather than be able to name all the bones 🙄

If you are planning on taking both, I would take anatomy prior to taking physiology. In my school anatomy is not a pre-req for physio, but when I was taking it last semester - I found myself having a really hard time even though I got a good grade. Every time we went over an organ system - the teacher already expected you to know everything about it - so I and some of my classmates were at a serious disadvantage - in a way that we had to work extra hard to overcompensate and just to stay on the same level with those classmates that already have taken anatomy.

Also there are different levels - there is an upper division and an intro physiology - make sure you take the one that's right for the schools you are applying to.

I see two perspectives on this. You're gonna learn this in pharmacy school anyway, so technically if they don't require it, you really shouldn't have to worry about it. One main thing to look at is the money. If it's costing you extra money to take the class, then I don't know. Some schools have a flat rate per semester, regardless of the number of credits.

However, physiology is so vital. I've heard people call much of the pharmacy field "applied physiology." And in order to understand physiology, you need to understand anatomy. I'm taking physiology right now and I love it. I hope that this helps me next year in pharm school. If you're able to take it, you should definitely take both. Make sure you take anatomy before physiology though. It'll definitely help you out in pharmacy school.

i know a lot of ppl who took physiology and not anatomy. i personally don't think it matters. if you haven't taken the PCAT yet, i'd take physiology prior to doing so. IT HELPS A LOT!!! and so does microbio. but yea.. if you have the option of taking any of the two (preferably physiology tho)... then do it. you'll have to take it in pharm school anyways and honestly, its better to struggle through it now and get a better grasp of it in pharm school.
