Posted this in the PT forum, but wanted to post it here as well:

Just wanted to bump this up & see if anyone who is in either program can give their perspective, advice, and the like. 🙂

I received acceptances from both Hunter and Stony Brook. Being a NYS resident, I would get in-state tuition at SBU, but Hunter is still SO cheap! I'm assuming that the tuition info I found online is up-to-date (or at least more or less reflective of current rates), but for all 3 years, Hunter is ~32K, and SBU is ~80K.

I absolutely fell in love with SBU's program when I went to interview. I got such a great vibe from the faculty and the current students. I love that they have the University hospital right there.

On the other hand, I know Hunter has great affiliations as well. Unfortunately, the interview process did not include a tour or the opportunity to really get to know the faculty or current students. They ARE in the process of constructing a new health and sciences building in collaboration with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (not scheduled for completion until after 2017, however). Hunter's DPT program is temporarily using a floor of the 68th St. campus, as the Brookdale campus is undergoing complete renovation and replacement of equipment, having suffered greatly from Sandy. The earliest I would be able to visit Hunter's actual PT facilities, then, might not be until later this spring.

I apologize for such a long post. I have just under 2 weeks to let Hunter know if I accept their offer. I would GREATLY appreciate any bit of insight! If there are any current students of either program, PLEASE feel free to chime in!

Hi,

Unfortunately I did not get accepted to Hunters program, but I really wanted to go there. I went to Hunter for Under-grad and I loved it there. I used their brookdale campus and I like how it was specifically made for the sciences/nursing/PT. Each department had its own specific building. The west building was for nursing and east building for PT. The east building still has damage but is set to be fixed by the start of spring semester. I have also spoken to former PT students and they really loved it there, which was one of the reasons I really wanted to go there. This is the best I can offer you with information. If I was in your shoes I would take it in a heartbeat.
Good luck with your decision.

Thanks so much for your input. I hope everything works out for you!

Did you get to see much of the PT facilities at Brookdale? I sat in on a lecture once. From my understanding, there are two main classrooms (please correct me if I'm wrong), with treatment tables set up at the back of each. Do you happen to know anything else about how classes are run? Do they share a cadaver lab with the nursing students?

when did you hear back from hunter? my friend interviewed with them in early december and still hasnt heard back.

@james91091 - Hunter emailed & called on January 3rd (interview was 12/8).

I am an alum at hunter and the PT program is a great program. i would say that the facilities are NOT at all exceptional compared to stony brook's and the campus itself is more crowded...although i think the class size is smaller for the PT program specifically. (and with the renovations the equipment could be updated) I currently work in a PT facility that has an affiliation with SBU and the students are ALL well prepared and informed. They all have great things to say about StonyBrook's staff and program over all.

Thank you for this! I will PM you with more questions soon. 🙂
