i had the same problem...and i was a micro/cell bio major as an undergrad. those questions are pretty rough.

I went through it in one day (it's a pretty quick read) right before my test and felt it really helped...I had a lot of cell signaling type questions that were a lot easier after having read HY Molec and Cell Bio

i kind thought the same thing about it being written in 99, i mean i guess alot of us dont have alot of choices as far as mol bio goes and I mean i am sure it is better than nothing but yould think HY would keep up with the times knowing damn well mol bio is getting big and put out a newer book.. wierd.

High Yield should give you 80-90% of molecular biology however it isn't complete because it doesn't talk about differentiation of vertebral limbs of fibroblast growth factor, Sonic HedgeHog, or HOX genes. You will see questions about these esoteric topics on the USMLE. BigFrank mentioned that the there is a greater emphasis from biochemistry to molecular biology. He is partially right. The real renaissance is in embryology. The new questions about HOX, PAX, and vertebra differentiation are in the arena of embryology (not molecular biology!). The tough questions that people are talking about are in developmental biology.

I prefer developmental biology by Gilbert. It is much more current (2003 rather than 1999) and it comes with a CD. Plus, it talks about HOX and Sonic Hedgehog in terms of differentiation. The book is dense but I use it for reference only, besides it is a good embryology and molecular biology review too.

Reading Lodish or Alberts as a reference is not a good idea. It barely touches the surface on HOX genes. That's because those books have a broad scope of molecular biology and is used as references by Graduate Students. Developmental Biology is more medically relevant. Check the book inside at Amazon.

Look up as a reference. Yes.

In fact, I have read the pharmacokinetics chapter (first 40 some pages) in Goodman and Gillman for Step 1. The rest of the book is junk for Step 1. Don't knock Goodman, I feel sorry for you when you get graph questions in pharmacokinetics, and you are clueless. Yeah, I'm sure First Aid is good enough for graphs that you will see in Pharmacology on Step 1. 👍

G & G is a great book! I wouldn't use it to study for Step 1, however. People that actually read all or a lot of Robbins will be rewarded on the Step 1.

Do us a favor, mark that page. After you take the NBME Form A exam, look up that page, and see if it answers the questions on that test. I will bet you money that it doesn't. If you are cheap, go to your medical library and ask for a copy.

Also go to the front desk of your library and ask for Goodman, you will be able to read it too. It will be a cold day in KELL before I own that book.

The more darts you have the greater chance you will get more questions right on the exam. If you only want 60%-70% (score of 182) of the Step 1 questions just focus on First Aid and QBANK.
