any thoughts? anyone used it and found it helpful for step one...i'm ******ed when it comes to genes and stuff.
any feedback is greatly appreciated

true, i have a q. on this too. I read kaplan's molec bio, and it wasn't that bad. Should I also read HY? Has anyone done both, and can elaborate on this? Thanks a lot.

I really enjoyed HY Molecular Bio and thought it contributed greatly to my score.

I breezed through HY molec bio and thought I would be fine with q's. Well i just took the Qbank molec bio test (19 q's) and got slaughtered. Son of a gun that hurt my ego. Anyone else find them difficult or is it just me?

i noticed that the HY molec bio was written in '99 - does this matter? Any new, exciting molec bio stuff that they like to ask about that isnt in there?

i had the same problem...and i was a micro/cell bio major as an undergrad. those questions are pretty rough.

Yeah, I got a 43 in Cell Bio on Qbank as of now. I really hate those electron micrographs.

Good thing I'm not the only one. Dang those were challenging. Is it true there's a lot more molec bio q's on recent step 1 exams?

I went through it in one day (it's a pretty quick read) right before my test and felt it really helped...I had a lot of cell signaling type questions that were a lot easier after having read HY Molec and Cell Bio

i kind thought the same thing about it being written in 99, i mean i guess alot of us dont have alot of choices as far as mol bio goes and I mean i am sure it is better than nothing but yould think HY would keep up with the times knowing damn well mol bio is getting big and put out a newer book.. wierd.

From what I hear there are a lot more questions on molecular bio on the newer tests.

Here is one opinion on that book.

take care,

High Yield should give you 80-90% of molecular biology however it isn't complete because it doesn't talk about differentiation of vertebral limbs of fibroblast growth factor, Sonic HedgeHog, or HOX genes. You will see questions about these esoteric topics on the USMLE. BigFrank mentioned that the there is a greater emphasis from biochemistry to molecular biology. He is partially right. The real renaissance is in embryology. The new questions about HOX, PAX, and vertebra differentiation are in the arena of embryology (not molecular biology!). The tough questions that people are talking about are in developmental biology.

I prefer developmental biology by Gilbert. It is much more current (2003 rather than 1999) and it comes with a CD. Plus, it talks about HOX and Sonic Hedgehog in terms of differentiation. The book is dense but I use it for reference only, besides it is a good embryology and molecular biology review too.

Reading Lodish or Alberts as a reference is not a good idea. It barely touches the surface on HOX genes. That's because those books have a broad scope of molecular biology and is used as references by Graduate Students. Developmental Biology is more medically relevant. Check the book inside at Amazon.

If your goal is less than 240. Completely disregard my post and memorize High Yield Molecular Biology.

Yes, and while you are at it, might as well read Goodman & Gillman and Robbins.

Read, Cover to Cover. NO.

Look up as a reference. Yes.

In fact, I have read the pharmacokinetics chapter (first 40 some pages) in Goodman and Gillman for Step 1. The rest of the book is junk for Step 1. Don't knock Goodman, I feel sorry for you when you get graph questions in pharmacokinetics, and you are clueless. Yeah, I'm sure First Aid is good enough for graphs that you will see in Pharmacology on Step 1. 👍

G & G is a great book! I wouldn't use it to study for Step 1, however. People that actually read all or a lot of Robbins will be rewarded on the Step 1.

Have you read either of the texts you are describing or are you just pulling our chain? By the way, MBOC is a 2002 edition (4th).

I don't endorse any of these books for primary references on Step 1 by the way in case someone might have though that earlier from my words. They are good texts for looking up things you come across in your review. I actually got a lot of the cell and molecular biology in my biochemistry review.

Right now I'm doing embryology and I'm seeing it there too. The HOX complex directs devolpment of the pharyngeal apparatus. As a side note, I could see the boards asking what vitamin is important in this step. Anyone know? I'll reply with the answer if nobody gets it by tomorrow. Hope everyone is doing well in their review...

Do us a favor, mark that page. After you take the NBME Form A exam, look up that page, and see if it answers the questions on that test. I will bet you money that it doesn't. The best book for the developmental biology questions on Step 1 is not Langman's Embryology, or Developing Human by Moore. It is by Gilbert. If you are cheap, go to your medical library and ask for a copy.

Also go to the front desk of your library and ask for Goodman, you will be able to read it too. It will be a cold day in KELL before I own that book.

ONE LAST TIME PEOPLE. IF YOUR GOAL IS BELOW 240, DON'T BOTHER WITH GOODMAN OR DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY! STEP 1 exam is like throwing darts. The more darts you have the greater chance you will get more questions right on the exam. If you only want 60%-70% (score of 182) of the Step 1 questions just focus on First Aid and QBANK.

Furthermore, I just hate it when people ask is this enough for Step 1. blah, blah, blah. How can you ask if First Aid is enough for Pharm, unless, we know what your goal is for Step 1. This is a STOOOOOPID QUESTION. Thus, qualify all future threads of is this enough by telling us your goal.

EXAMPLE: If I want to just pass Step 1 is First Aid enough for Biochemistry.

Did I tell you what I was reading in embryology? The short answer is "No." 👍

Hey, go outside and breathe some good ol' fresh air...you need some relaxation therapy because you're about to explode.

Did I specify that you were reading a certain book?

As Jalby would say, "Nope." I think that makes your reply, null and void.

Yo, Jalby it looks like this thread is going to come up on your search. Now, you are going to have to read this meaningless thread to find out why your name was brought up and hence, waste your precious time.

👍 👍 👍 Three because you're extra cool. Good luck on your exam.

I won't need luck because I put in the time to learn the material. Blood and Sweat will pay dividends, baby. More importantly, a solid game plan. The best laid plans if I say so myself.

P.S. I tease the USC Trojan all the time. J-Dawg is a good sport, and has a sense of humor unlike some folks.

 - Still your #1 fan, even though you're a pompous bugaboo.

Haha, down boy. These Trojans are so much easier to train than the crosstown Bruins. It was like throwing a stick and waiting for the J-Dawg to retrieve it.
