1) A man comes to your vet clinic with a dog that is clearly the victim of severe abuse and cruelty. The man feeds you a line about an accident and how he wants you to fix the poor thing up. You know the dog couldn't possibly have received those injuries from anything other than abuse. You also know the man is a gang member. If you send the dog back, you know it will only suffer more. You cannot contact the police because you fear for your own safety. What would be the appropriate professional and ethical solution?

2) A dog breeder comes to your clinic with a litter of puppies. They don't meet the breed standards, but are still healthy, handsome creatures. The breeder does not want to waste money on dogs that won't return the investment and asks for you to euthanize them. Again, what would be the appropriate thing to do? What if the breeder says she'll kill the puppies herself if you don't?

Homework? Interview prep? Seems a bit suspicious for a first time post...

Actually, I'm just curious. But thanks for your condescending comment anyways.

Why are you asking these questions on a pre-veterinary forum? Are you applying to vet school? or perhaps are you trying to write an article on the ethics of potential veterinary students? Or just an outsider trolling? Or doing homework? or an activist? Or many other things.

Your motivation for asking the question is a reasonable response from this on-line community, especially since, as was mentioned, it is your first post, in the middle of the night (for most of us), and we don't know or have any history from you.

Sorry if people aren't accepting your questions with open arms, but some of us are naturally skeptics.

Maybe I was just curious as to how people interested in a career taking care of animals would answer a question like this. My background should not affect your answer. The fact that I'm a first time poster does not make me a troll. Your suspiscion is unfounded. Belittling someone for asking harmless questions is inappropriate and insensitive.

No one is belittling you. People are just wondering why you are asking these questions. You ask for opinions without giving any yourself. That's why people are skeptical. What would you do in these situations?

How should we know if it is an unfounded question!

I don't want to see a quote of mine end up in some PETA article decrying "future veterinarians willing to kill innocent pups" or the like.

Likewise I don't want to do someone's homework for them.

This forum is for people interested in veterinary school to help them understand the profession, and get in to school, not to satisfy the curiosity of outsiders with an unknown agenda. And your continued resistance to provide any background to your questions only reinforces my belief that you have nefarious objectives.

Now I will be condescending and say GO AWAY TROLL.

:troll:

The irony here is that you want people to answer your questions with open arms, but are apparently unwilling to answer questions with open arms yourself. If you want people to seriously answer your ?s, then you need to provide more information - aka, answer the questions people are asking you. Your background will indeed affect everyone's answer because it will give everyone more understanding as to how to answer the question. If you have experience working at clinics, we may not need to explain the everyday going-ons in the vet clinic world. We may not need to explain legalities, because you'll already understand them. Or, you could have absolutely no experience, therefore we'd need to start with the basics and go from there.

Unless you're willing to share a little bit more info, don't expect anyone to take you seriously.

I never trust anyone who uses numbers in place of letters, as in your name.

If I see a student election sign with "Vote 4 ... " I take note of the name and vote for the opposition.

I was just reluctant to answer in order to avoid the inevitable argument that would start...

I DO know one answer is apparently NOT "tell them you'll euthanize the dogs but really jsut keep them yourself and/or try to find homes".... they frown on that one.
