Ok, if you were given a choice between these two situations which one would you choose ??? Remember, your life long dream is dental school !

1. You have no money. You have a 3.8 overall gpa. You have a science gpa of 3.5.

2. You have $170,000. Your overall gpa is 2.9. Your science gpg is 2.4. Unfortunately, you cannot take more classes.

Which do you choose? WHY?

Just for kicks !
Enjoy,
GS

first one. I'm more likely to get into a less expensive state school, and I can take out loans to pay for dental school. Afterward, I have the career of my dreams and just have to work to pay off the loans.

first one. 170,000 doesn't do anything for you long term unless you can find an admissions director that takes bribes

Definitely the 1st one.

You have almost no shot at going to dental school with a 2.4 science gpa.

Clearly, with the existence of loans, you have to choose the first one.

What if #2 had over $1 million?

Does that change anything?

First one of course. That's why they invented loans. Plus you could get a scholarship with that GPA, cutting down on your loans even more.

I don't think its cleary the first one. For most students maybe, but not if your business minded and have had luck investing.

The second one can be great also. You're talking about 170,000 today, in 4 years you could double that if you invest well.

So lets just assume you're able to turn it into 340,000.

You can get loans in both cases, so basically it just depends on how picky you are with the school. You can get into dental school with situation 1, lets say you get a 24 on DAT you could probably get in NYU, and at worst case Howard

Also you can get scholarships while in school. Lets take the NYU example, I heard of a guy getting a 100k scholarship with a barely 3.0 GPA and 22 DAT, so you might get that, and even if you didn't you could get it in school if you were a stop student. I know NYU is like over 200k but lets say you half it so its more like a normal school around 100k.

Then don't forget about your 340,000 that you made. I'd always take money now rather than later, this is America! Its so easy to make money if you have something to start with. Too many people get stuck on loans. Just think when you come out if your paying off all your loans, how will you buy a practice?

Just something to think about. Again for most people maybe number 1, but for risk takers number 2 has a higher payout by far.

HA EXCELLENT !!!

Well this could be a very deep question in deed. If this were an interview question by a committe I would say this last guy won because he actually thought the process out.

See, there could be a number of variables involved. For example, the individual could have been a person that did bad the first year and failed out of school. Then that person could have went on and got a degree then 7 years later went back to school and taken a number of science classes and got all A's but yet his GPA only increased up to a 2.4. (when people do this they DO get into dental school. Dental schools look at IMPROVEMENT)

One person responded that no one with a 2.4 can get into dental school.

You need to understand, LOTS of people have gotten in over the years with low GPAs. Shoot, there are a number of schools with no minimum GPA. Look at some of the colleges average GPAs for the year. For example, HOWARD's 2003-2004 avg GPA is 2.9. That means people had below a 2.9 !!!! You know there are some 2.4's in there.

Why are they so low? Maybe they are low because of my example above.

So I guess the lesson is,
think about what all would be involved.

I for one would take the money !!!

Thanks for all the great answers !!!

Not only is 170K not that much (even if it DOES pay off in an ivestment to get you 300K), but a LEGIT DOCTORAL DEGREE is priceless!! (insert mastercard logo here 😉 )

ItsGavinC said:
Given all that has been said, I think I'd still choose option 1. The $170k just isn't that much in the long-term.

OH MAN !

I dont know. How about the individuals who would choose number one then fail out of dental school later.

They would take that back !!!

Of course all the SDNers will suceed !!! I mean we care enough to do so or we wouldnt be here huh ?

Well you have a point.

I have already been accepted but I would choose number one because I like the money !!! 👍

Grammar hint.... Punctuation does not need to have a space from the word. Its "money!!!" not "money !!!"

Sorry, this just drives me crazy!!! (not crazy !!! 😉 )

I'd take #2. If you invest the $170,000 right, in 30 years you'll have more money than the #1 will have

why exactly should I care what you think ?

huh ?????

huh ? ? ??? ? ? ? ? ? ??? ? ?

hmmm ?

Who cares?

anal !

I think the situation wasn't set up properly, because I would easily choose option number 1 .

(does that punctuation drive you crazy ? Sorry if it does . )

Who cares? The admissions staff cares! I head a prof comment on it just the other day. I hope someone proof read your essay. I am not trying to be rude, I just see it all the time and it is one of my little pet peeves. Everyone has them, right?

I got into all 8 dental schools that I applied to and I know that I did that in my essay .

I dont care and neither did they .

So? ? ? ?

Keep your pet peeves to your self . . . unless you can contribute then dont try .

Okay, maybe Howard has a couple students with 2.4 science gpas. However, I would be shocked if you found me a school who accepted a student with that kind of gpa...a student who didnt have to overcome some insane kind of special circumstance.

#1 Before I got in I would have paid that much for a letter of acceptance. I want to be a Dentist more than I want to sit on my but and invest $170,000.

Even now that I am in I would not drop out if I won a million dollars. Again I want to be a Dentist.

If I had millions I would likely go on to specialize and volunteer with some international organization. Maybe get an MPH and start my own Org.

heybud look at H O W A R D !!!

Look at their stats !

duh. Their avg science gpa is lowwwwwwwwwwwww

if you think that people with 2.4's dont get in dental school than i am sorry to hear that.

there are plenty !

do a search.

Im not sure if you noticed or not, but I already mentioned Howard in my previous post .

Plenty you say ? You are Dillusional .

Yeah, you can invest that 170Gs for 15 years with a 5% interest rate and it will double, 23 years it will triple...
But you gotta remember that the life long dream is to be in dental school, so for this question, I have to pick #1. With #2 it might be imposible to get into a dental school, no matter how many times you apply (unless you score 25s on the DAT). 😳

Second one. Invest it. 70% stock, 20% bonds and 10% cash. Work a computer job for 60-80k a year. Start own computer company after 4 years. Become a millionare after another 4 years.

So you got into all 8 huh? Should I bow down now or later? My hell... 🙄 My point is that it's all about NOT LOOKING LIKE AN IDIOT! English isn't a strong point for science people, (mine can always use spell check, etc 😳 ) but when someone doesn't know how to write correctly it knocks a little prestige off their intelligence.

If I knew how long I have left to live that would be an easy pick. More than 15 #1 less than 15 #2. But then again 170,000 dollars doesn't seem that much...don't think I could afford a whole lot of cocaine and hookers after I buy a ferrari. 😀

Thanks, I know my stats are bad. After 2 years of applying I got only 1 acceptance. If I can only pull that with almost a 3.1 gpa and a 2.9 science, with a 21 DAT score, then with what logic are you saying that there are plenty of spots for someone with a 2.4 gpa??

You just proved my point. Thank you.

Dont want to talk about this any longer but in case you havent noticed....

Check out physicians hand writing.....

Are you stating that they are idiots b/c you cant read 95% of what they write .

you lose ! Go be an english teacher if you think thats so important. Also, if writing correctly is so important then why are english teachers in the lowest paid profession?

Lose again .

well if you did that bad then you will probably fail out anyway.

Just make sure to have a backup plan. For example try taking some business classes so you can manage a dollar tree or family dollar store if you fail out quickly and need a job to pay off the student loans.

yes, if you fail out you still have to pay them .

haahahah

I may fail out, I may not. If I dont, then my compassion and kindness will take me much further than you as a healthcare professional.
