A friend of mine has been diagnosed with hypothyroid disorder and I would like to know what would be better:
1) Take a current thyroid stimulator (Cytomel, Levotabs, Levothroid, Levoxyl, and Synthroid)
2) Dieting and natural healing techniques?

thank you!

How exactly does one "diet" away hypothyroidism?

Ur friend's gonna have to do both

take some T3 but he still cant just eat burger and fries and expect T3 to just solve everything.

Some good natural ways to increase the metabolism would be to increase some lean muscle mass (lift weights), do cardio (keep metabolism high, control bodyfat), eat low glycemic food and smaller, more frequent meals, drink atleast a gallon of water. These are some natural ways to get that metabolism high, but at the same time i guess ur friend will be on T3 for life.

peace

Omar

That is exactly what i told him!!! But he seems to think that "drugs" are the devil and should only be used after every other option has been exhausted?!? I am really scared for his health I want to help him realize that pharms are his best bet for improvement.

Thank you for the advice... He eats very healthy to start with (metabolic typing, works out) and thinks that all he needs is a "tweak" in his diet. Are there any other treatment avenues out there? what exactly do those drugs do?

Thyroid hormone is a hormone that has a broad spectrum of very important effects all over your body. It's very easy to replace by taking T3, and that will effectively "cure him" provided he keeps taking it his whole life.

If he doesn't take T3 (i.e. levothyroxine, synthroid, etc.), he'll have a lot of problems. Unless his deficiency is very very minor (unlikely), he needs to take T3! Otherwise he'll have a lot of issues no matter how much diet and exercise he does. In fact, w/o thyroid hormone, he might not even be able to continually muster up the motivation to maintain diet and exercise. Plus, it will make him a slower and worse thinker.

He needs to take the T3 replacements. Trust me, I know from personal experience. I had my thyroid removed due to cancer. If he has a mild case, TSH between 3 and 4, and his endo is iffy he may be able to control it without any replacements. If his TSH is anywhere above 4 he needs to take a supplement. If not he will ultimately gain alot of weight, not have the energy to exercise it off, and be plagued with slow brain function. Trust me a pill a day is an easy thing to do...even if it is for the rest of your life.

Tell him that the thyroxin is a "supplement" which it actually is. It doesn't stimulate his thyroid it replaces the hormone that he doesn't make.

I always tell diabetics that they shouldn't take insulin because it's not natural. It's all about dieting and natural healing techniques!

Are you being a cynic? Or are you just a troll?

I guess diabetics are supposed to go into comas and die. I do not think you should breathe or practice medicine, if you do not know that insulin is required to live.

Can you elaborate about how to accomplish this? 😱

Yeah thank you again everyone (except MEdpoop) for your replies.

dancinjenn, I feel so sorry for your cancer bout and hope you are doing much better.

Sorry, I was trying to use sarcasm to illustrate a point. A lot of people are adverse to using medicine and prefer other means that don't involve a trip to the pharmacy. But in cases where a person's body simply isn't up to the task of producing a much needed enzyme there is no reason to suggest that a "natural" means of treatment would be any better than a synthetic one.

Good to see everyone has their sarcasm meters turned up to MAX today! Oh wait, was that just sarcasm?

Thanks...I was diagnosed 2 years ago...crappy way to spend age 23. I am doing much better. The radiation treatments have shrunk what is left down to microscopic proportions and hopefully it won't grow anymore. My medication suppresses what cancer cells are left so I am as close to cured as I can get. I don't let it get me down though. 🙂

First of all, your friend needs to start taking medication, and will need to take this one pill a day for the rest of his/her life.

However, hypo has probably caused them to gain weight, sleep more, be less active, etc. Also when the thyroid is unbalanced, sometimes depression, etc. is common. Once your friend starts taking medication, it will be a slow transition, but eventually they will feel better, and more productive.

As a friend, you can be encouraging and supportive.
