When a patient asks a physician:

"Am I going to die?"

Isn't the only correct answer to this question "yes"?

The physician could then elaborate:

"but not prematurely from [condition]"

or

"unfortunately..."

(Yes, this observation is the product of premed neurosis)

I think the best would be the response "sorry, but the tests came in and it seems so" *silence* 'hahaha just ****in' wit ya"

How bout that joke where a doctor calls up a guy and says his wife may die soon.. and the guy rushes over all worried and the doc tells him that she'll be okay BUT he's gonna have to take care of her for the rest of her life and the guy's all depressed.. then the doc goes "ahh just kidding, she's dead!"

HAHAHA! that's so funny!

But seriously, I think they will tell you if you're going to die b/c later on it could be his/her ass if a lie was told or the patient was mislead in some way. If a patient is conscious and alert enough to ask, the doc might mention tests, procedures, results that need to be carried out before he can make a decision such as that. I.e, " Well we need to run some tests before we know the next step, and then we'll go from there".

On the same token, if the patient really is dying, he/she might not be in a postion to even ask the question. 😕

Hope that cleared it up for you.

This reminds me of the Ali G interview with the general surgeon, Coop.

Err... Its less humorous when you realize that the immediate timeframe and condition is implied within the patient's question, and as such the answer to the question should remain within those same boundaries. Its a valid question, or I dont have a sense of humor.

BTW, the one who relayed that joke, Ive seen a skit on that and almost died laughing. Funny stuff.

When I worked up in ICU and the patient would code, we would call the family and say that things are not looking good for your loved one, come to the hospital quickly. That was a little misleading because the patient was already dead and we were trying to revive them. Even if the patient was dead (DNR patients) we would say he/she is not doing good.
I never understood the thought process behind it. I would rather say he/she is dead already don't try to beat the traffic and get in an accident trying to say those last goodbyes.
