I volunteer with the 411 program at my school. It is a service set up by student services that offers new student orientations that last for a week and a service for student that want individual mentoring. The individual mentoring lasts for one term and they choose to extend if it they need to or just do that one term. New students and experienced students having issues can request a mentor. I volunteer to help with the new student orientation program and I have been a student mentor for about a year now. The student mentoring program requires a lot more out of me than the new student orientation as one may imagine. I started doing this because I have found a passion for school and I wanted to help inspire others that were having doubts.
How would you put something like this on your application in terms of volunteer work? How would you count it in terms of hours because it is not like we have a set amount of hours every week, it really depends on the students needing help.
I don't count the new student orientation as anything special because it is so basic and only lasts a week anyways, but I put a bit of effort into my one on one student mentoring and it is something I enjoy doing because I want to help other students. The areas I help these students in vary such as time management skills, organization, finding financial aid, staying motivated, setting short term and long term goals, how to balance a heavy course load, how to calm anxiety or stress, how to balance family life with school and just about anything else that might present an issue to a student. I plan to keep doing this until I am done with my bachelor degree and possibly afterwards because they like to have a couple alumni volunteer for some of the programs.
The director of student services let us know recently that we can use her as a reference if anyone wants to check on the volunteer work we did with the school so that is good and I have her contact info saved. I started doing this before I was even thinking about volunteer hours so the goal here was not to make my application sparkle, I just wanted to help students, but if it adds volunteer hours to my application I should not pass that up.
