So are the main characters still in med school? I heard Calso name the trainees "doctors" but then one of them was talking about how they would apply to residency next year. I really doubt 3rd and 4th year med students would do what they do in the hospital, but I may be wrong??

Like myself, you must be watching the Scrubs marathon on Comedy Central. Yep, it's going to be a productive day.

If there is something worth wasting an entire day on, it's SCRUBS. The show is hilarious. The medicine isn't bad either.

ha yeah I was watching too now I gave up to "study anatomy" aka check email and SDN...

I think they're interns doing the transitional year of residency? But that doesnt really make sense cause I think even in that transitional year you still are matched for somewhere for the 2nd post-grad year of starting the actual residency...

Maybe they just wanted to make the cahracters sound stressed like they had to be applying for something and their careers were on the line constantly...

yeah it's the marathon, it is the first time i am watching this show. So interns are residents, right? why were thye talking about getting into a residency?

In season 1, they are interns (internal medicine and surgery). Seasons 2-4, they are residents. Season 5 they become attendings.

HOORAY! Scurbs Marathon!
BOO! Biochem test...

It's starting right from the beginning of the show. Interns=year one of residency.

i could be wrong but for some programs, like the one at sacred heart, you apply for an internship/transitional year, then you apply for the residency. nowadays, internship is referred to as the first year of residency and you apply to both at the same time. they aren't med students and never were.

Yeah I have all 5 seasons on my external HD - I've been watching it for the last week or so - I'm up to season 4.

Yeah they're definitely interns year 1 and residents year 2-4. But I don't remember them ever talking about having to apply for a residency position.

Turk was applying to be an attending at that hospital.
Elliot was applying to a fellowship.

When Elliot was breaking up with that good-looking boyfriend of hers she said she would be applying to a residency...

Ah, wow thanks good pinpoint - that scene I could find. I guess I never would have noticed her saying "if my internship doesn't go well then I'll never get a good residency next year."

I wonder if they mention it a bunch of other times and I just missed it - lol.

some people do have to apply for a residency after completing their intern year. Some programs don't include an intern year in their program so if you are in those programs you have apply after your intern. Or you can line up an intern year elsewhere and then move in to the other program. So it is feasible to have her need to do well in internship to compete for residencies still. But I think the more likely answer is that it was a mistake in writing.

i have all 5 seasons on my external HDD too. i hope the 6th season introduces something along the lines of JD having a successful relationship. haha. at the end of the 5th season, did turk become a surgical attending? i can't remember. it should have been his final year of residency.

Hmm - I'm pretty sure he was an attending in season 5. Either that or he applied to be one at that hospital. I remember the episode where there were only three spots open for attendings and he got one of them because he gets to know his patients more than other surgeons.

Scrubs is far more realistic than ER or Grey's Anatomy according to a very well known Southern Cali MD.
