I am embarrassed to ask...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
post-bac is typically a one to two year program, depending on the school, after you graduate in which you take primarily undergrad/ grad science courses.. generally for people who dont get in the first time they apply to med school, and need a resume-booster

Post-Baccalaureate

As in after you receive you Baccalaureate (BS, BA, etc) degree. These are undergraduate level classes taken to either complete pre-requisites or to help boost an undergrad GPA. Post-Bac GPA is calculated seperately on AMCAS and then included in overall undergrad GPA.

post-bac is a structured program for those whom already have a bachelors degree, but don't have a science related background.

It's a "post-bachelor" program specifically geared towards fulfilling the requirements for, and improving your chances of getting into, a medical school.

A post-bac can also be a research position.

Some people may decide to go do research for a year at the NIH or at a university and this might be called a post-bac position. Usually these positions are one to two years in length. They are a way of gaining more experience or taking a break from school before going on to medical school. I am doing a one year post-bac right now at the NIH and would highly recommend it. It is a great way to get away from studying for a while and improve your CV at the same time. Good luck.

post-baccaulaureate program. Programs generally designed to aid pre-meds in preparing or strengthening their applications for medical school. The programs are mainly intended for those that already have their bachelor's degree. There are quite a few programs out there ranging from MCAT prep, to actual masters programs dedicated to med-school prep where you take several upper-division science classes, or even some med-school classes with the med students themselves! Some programs combine all three facets. Several med-schools have versions of the post-bacc program that are run by either the med school or the pre-med office of the undergrad institution. I am applying to several programs this year, primarily the ones in Hahnemann and Georgetown, but there are many out there to choose from as well. let me know if I can help! 😀

Thanks everyone for your responses. 🙂

Street Philosopher... so what if I am new here, so what if I have questions that I could have searched. Personally, I am so busy studying that I have enough time to check in here and there and it is both faster and more personal if I post the question myself. If you did not like the fact that I asked a question, then you should have restrained from answering.

To all of those that kindly answered my question, thank you. I appreciate all the responses that have given me alittle more insight.

As my mother always told me, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Street Philosopher, maybe you can remember that when you encounter patients. I hope you treat their questions more kindly then you treated mine. I guess sometimes it is easier to ridicule people on line than irl.

So why were you embarassed to ask it?

Because as an inteligent person sometimes it is embarassing to not know things that everyone else seems to know, especially when you are new somewhere. Embarrassment does not mean the same thing as stupid. I never wrote "I am asking a stupid question".

i went to a college named bethany.
bethany, please try to take a little ribbing without getting your panties in a wad (something my mother says)

And as my mother always said, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

Just kidding Bethany!!! In all honesty, I find searching on this site and sometimes others clumsy and time-wasting. So you asked your question and got your answer, and also got flamed by someone who has made nearly 3000 posts... to a pre-med site... maybe next we should all do a google-search on obsessive and pre-med and see if we come up with anything.

Everybody: Chill; you must chill; I have hidden your keys.
