Hello, cold

Hi SDN, let me cut to the chase. We have a new upper division bio professor who keeps putting our exams out in a stack in front of her office for us to sift through. Our scores are right next to our names so inevitably everyone in a pretty big class sees each other's scores. I want to say something but am worried I might piss her off. Isn't there a law against this kind of thing? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Wait, why would it matter in any way?

Because whether I do good or bad I don't want everyone seeing my score. I don't want people looking through my exam and seeing what I put for answers etc

I feel like there may be a law against this, but I may be wrong. How is it handled in your other classes? My college took this pretty seriously - if a prof wanted to leave graded exams out, they had to assign the class ID numbers. That way all graded work had no names on it.

Just get 100s on the tests, problem solved.

+1. Who cares if people see each others grades? Is it really going to matter in the grand scheme of things?

lol? why does it matter at all?

.....Who cares?

No one is going to do that, you need to relax.

I go to a small school where everyone knows each other and TAs for each other's classes etc

i can surmise you're 24. christ grow up and get over it

They won't. There's no benefit in it anyways unless they want to massage their gunner ego. Now, stop caring about this. This is a non-issue.

You could try sending an anonymous e-mail. At small school where everyone knows each other, that's a pretty inconsiderate thing to do.

So everyone here would be totally ok with getting your tests back and having them passed around the class to be inspected

What would seeing someone else's grade do to benefit anyone? In the end everyone is responsible for their own grades, there is no benefit to seeing anyone else's.

Most people (well, me at least) are way too lazy to look through other people's tests/answers, or really anything other than getting my exam and bolting. I think you may be overreacting a bit. On the other hand, you could just own every test and not have to worry about this.

Haha there is a difference between passing them around for everyone to inspect verses putting them in a pile for people to pull. Don't blow it out of proportion.

1. That wouldn't happen.

2. If it does, I won't even care. It's none of my business to know what they got and none of their business to know what I got. If they are satisfied with their success over me, big deal. Focus on getting good grades and stop caring what others think of you.

Or if they think they deserve points for a question and want to see what people who did well put for it.

I don't think this situation would bother me, but I can see why some people would care.

I wouldn't mind at all, but I go to a large university where I don't know most of my classmates. If I went to a small LAC it would irritate me, at the risk of sounding like a little baby.

Bring it up with your administration if you are having issues with it. It might be against the university's code of conduct however, depending on your school.

You're missing the point though people at my school care and do bother to snoop around other people's tests I've seen it

I actually already do this whenever I get an A on a test. I just tell my classmates that if they want to see the answer key, my test will be going around the room.

Okay? So why do you care? Those guys have nothing better to do but to massage (or repair) their egos. Don't be like them.

If you really have a problem with it, email your professor. He might just hand the exams to the TA, who can hand them back individually rather than leaving them in a pile for people to grab their exam. Or he can write the score on the back page or somewhere where it isn't visible.

I can assure you that you aren't the only person who has had a problem with this. I personally don't care who sees my grade, but I know someone in one of my classes must have complained about the fact that everyone could see his grade on the exam, because the prof handed out our last exam by putting them into individual manilla folders. It was pretty ridiculous, in my opinion.

This is funny, but what about when you don't get an A?

Yeah if they want to go snooping around and looking at my test it wouldn't rustle my jimmies...not sure why OP is so defensive over how she performs.

^this is what happens. no one gives a damn and just wants to get out of class.

He will correct his answers by using the answer key and pass the corrected test to everyone in class. I have never seen it nor encountered this situation before though.

Because when your average class size is fifteen people and everyone is up everyone else's ass all year long and in each other's space I would like to have at least one thing to myself that isn't everyone else's business

Most schools have some sort of academic confidentiality code. Drop an (anonymous, if you wish) email to an administrative type of person and it might get changed.

Then get a restraining order.

This is so high school....

Good one. Thanks for all of your insight. I appreciate it very much.

 What can I say? You're simply overreacting and somehow exaggerating the situation. You need to stop caring what other people think of you, and if you're still uncomfortable, then you should report it to a higher authority.

Yes. If you're a declared premed, it's a HIPAA violation. Report them immediately to the Department of Health and Human Services.

I would bask in the glory that comes with crushing the curve myself, but I was never afraid of the competition.

Wow, didn't know there was a legal protection for premeds. Thanks!

seriously how do you know that I'm exaggerating if all you know of the situation is what I've told you.

This isn't exaggeration?

Because when your average class size is fifteen people and everyone is up everyone else's ass all year long and in each other's space I would like to have at least one thing to myself that isn't everyone else's business

Even if this actually happened, I would stay as far away from them as possible and report their actions to a higher authority.

lovin the sarcasm there haha. DSHS for exam test privacy violation lololololol

hah, you think you're worried about what other people do and you're in college? just wait until you get to med school. it's high school all over again. In addition, we're doing everything in front of each other.

While you can vent your frustrations regarding the situation, and yes i can see why it is frustrating, you also need toughen your skin. Because as a physician, you'll be expected to have people watch everything you do, and being all private about "how you did" will be looong gone.

It's a figure of speech, Agent B. imagine spending four years with the same tiny group of people. Everyone is in your business, there is no privacy. Everyone is everyone else's TA and will judge you in being a TA based on the scores they think you get (or in this case they see). It really happens. There was a girl who graduated last year who no one wanted to hire and no one listened to when she TAed because it was known that she didn't do well. They gave her bad reviews and even made her cry once when she was TAing. Yes, it's immature, but it is what it is.

And my friend answered my question. The law is called FERPA and apparently it is a pretty big deal. I probably wouldn't say anything anyways (and still won't), I just wanted to see if anyone else had heard of it. Apparently I have no right to be upset and am an immature exaggerating crybaby if it pisses me off.

Pretty sure that is a FERPA violation. I am surprised the professor does this. I worked in higher ed student affairs for a year and where I worked they were extremely anal about FERPA and the associated university privacy policies(most universities have privacy policies that are stricter than FERPA). Assuming you don't want to approach the professor, I would let someone know in the administration. At my school we had a campus FERPA coordinator in the registrar's office but I worked at a big state school. You likely won't get her in trouble or anything but they will most likely just tell her to knock it off. You technically can file a complaint with the Department of Education(information on their website) but honestly that is probably overkill.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure all of you had the option for privacy with your grades. As much as you say you wouldn't care, it's awfully nice to have that option. I'm open about my scores, but the fact that I have no control over who sees them is what makes me frustrated.

As Alejandro wisely said, you need to deal with it. If you land up in the situation like that of the TA (even remotely), you have every right to report it to higher authorities (including federal/state authorities), since as you said, it's a FERPA violation.
