After weeks of trying to register I am finally here!!!!
I found this web site about 2 months ago and it has being a great source of information and moral support....
I would love to participate and be part of the SDN "family", my only problem????? ENGLISH!!!!! It is far from perfect.....I wish I were from India.....but not, I am a Latina......with all the good and bad..........Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I will be around here every now and then and you can count with a new foreign dentist friend.....

😎

Nice to Have you here Elto. Welcome. Your English see to be perfect to me. It is good to see the fungibility of ambitions. Peoples from different cultures want to be role playing into others. Great to see that spirit.

Again Welcome

hey elto, where in FL?

Great that makes 2 of us!!! 😀 with all the good and bad....

for your warm welcome.....As I told you, I had been reading the post for several weeks but just yesterday I could register.
I think I know a little bit of almost everybody here by now.....
About me? I have been living in the USA for 3 years, always dreaming about getting my license to practice here.
I took the TOEFL, NDB part I and II, TSE (wich nobody even mention here), got my ECE transcripts, etc, etc, etc.
I was so happy to have the requierements to start applying to differents Universities UNTIL.......I found this web site!!! And realized (just like Bond) that my scores weren't good enough 😱
Unfortunately (???) I had applied to U penn already.I applied on May and never got a call or a rejection letter....nothing!!!
I know that I don't have any chances there but it would be nice to have the rejection letter and show it to my grandkids someday!!!
Now, I am planning in taking the practical test to get my license as dental hygienist on June 04. That would give me the oportunity to work part time (without going to a bankrupcy...) so I can study to take the NDB part I again...
Sound like the perfect plan, doesn't it? My worst fear?
To get a LOWER score the second time!!!! But, I guess those are the risks you have to take sometimes.....
Anyway, at least now I know that I can always come here and get some moral support from you.....That is a nice feeling.....
To DDS Fight: I am sorry about your rejection at U Penn...
To busupshot83: I live in Jacksonville....
To Meggs: Your posts are always useful, loaded with tons of information. Also, I love that sentence about the "preservativo Imperfecto" It cracks me out every time:laugh:

Was the application period open in May? Maybe you should call UPenn and find out whatever happen to you.

Si, por fin hay alguien que entiende mis chistes. Por estos rumbos hay muy poca gente que sepa nuestro idioma.... o cualquier otro...

Hi elto.

I know exactly how you feeling. Congratulations.

Anyway, could you please explain better the hygiene thing? Is this just possible in Florida? Please let me understand the procedure.

Thank you😉

Chuchuca,

The only state in the Union that allows a foreign trained dentist to obtain a Hygiene license is Florida. You must have passed either the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam or the National Board Dental Exams. See the following website:

www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/dentistry/dn_lic_req.html

In addition to the Boards you need to pass a written test on the rules and laws of Florida as well as a State administered practical exam. I would imagine that this is an easy process for any foreign trained dentist. I know several dentists who are now licensed in California that were previously licensed hygienists in Florida. I am told that the rate of pay was as low as $$20 to 25 per hour. However they all said that it was great exposure seeing how a dental practice in America is run. Unfortunately, Florida is the only state that is progressive enough to enact such a rule.

OK, just retype the address as it appears in a new window becuase it does work. Scroll down the page and you will see the rules.

something new in this forum....I had no idea that Florida is the only state that has the hygiene oportunity for us.....
We better hurry up and take advantage of this before they change their minds.
What I understand is that you have to take NDHB, then the Florida test (rules and practical part on a patient), 2 CE courses and you are done.....I am not sure if you need a green card to do this....I think it is one of the requirements.....With all the paperwork that I have done in this 3 years I don't remember .....
You would have to check the ADHA page.....
As dentisthusband says, the pay isn't great but is better than a DA......
Right now I am so frustrated with all this process to get into college that I am going to go for that DH license....I think that would give me some time to get some energy back and try to retake Part I.....
When I moved here, I knew that the process to get my license as a dentist wouldn't be easy....but this is sometimes plain ridiculous!!!!!!! Do you feel the same way?
Do you have idea of how many years take for the average dentist to make it into college?........I think that I will be 90 by then ....
🙁

Elto..if the english that you so far, have used in writing in this forum is truly bad..

then May God, not help who is worser than you...

Welcome again...enjoy using your bad english:clap:

Hi Elto,

I think you slightly misread the rules. You do not need to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam if you have already passed the National Board Dental Exams. You only need to pass one or the other, and since you have already passed both Dental Boards you do not need to take the Hygiene Board. In fact you may not even need to have passed both Dental Boards in order to get yur hygiene license, I can't tell from the posted rules. You should contact the Florida Board of Dentistry directly for details and a full explanation.

Regarding the green card, I can say that in nearly all cases you do not need to either have a green card or a student visa in order to sit for any exam of any type whatsoever. Anyone can come to the US on a tourist visa and sit for any type of examination. If you do go through the process of getting your dental hygiene license, you can more than likely find a dental office that would be willing to sponsor you for an H1 visa.

Suerte,

Scott

Will a dental hygienist job qualify for a H1 visa? H1 are for professional jobs, and I'm not sure hygienist is considered a professional job according to US laws.

About passing the boards...... just part 1 will do it. As long as you pass part 1 (with any grade) you can replace it for the hygienist board.

About green card.... I heard that you do need a green card for the practical test. I don't really know how true this is.

Hi

Do you guys have any info about the law test in Florida? Is there any class that I should take?

I want to keep my options open 🙂
I am an dental assistant right now, and believe me that sucks sometimes. 🙁

I have learned from my mistakes.....I took Part I and the NDHB the same month almost 3 years ago when I didn't know a lot about this process.....
That is also the reason I don't remember if they ask for a green card. I was looking the information about the Florida Board and in the application they ask if you are a citizen and also they ask for your social security number.....It is kind of weird (now that I am reviewing the information) because in the list of requirements they don't mention anything about a passport, visa, green card or similar.....
Chuchuca: Along with the application they send the Florida statutes. Those are the laws that you have to study....
About the work as a DA, You are VERY right, It sucks!!!!!
Dentists here think that you are can read minds and at the same time be an octopus!!!!!! I remember the assistants that work for my in my country use to complain.....ha,ha,ha. They know nothing about hard work..........
But if you think that working as a DH is gonna be piece of cake, think twice......it is hard, hard,hard......you have patients scheduled every 45 minutes but if the doctor has the opportunity (and that happens almost every day), he would put some of his patients between your patients!!!!! Of course he expects that "somehow" (a miracle???) you would finish on time....so, you don't even have time to go to the restroom. On top of everything you have to "bite" your tongue when you see obvious and DEEP cavities and he says that the pte. is OK 😕 (maybe because the insurance policy????) , also add the stress, the carpal tunnel sindrome and the low pay.....Noooo, it is not easy. And that is one of the reasons I am gonna do it....because every day I'll feel tired and understimated and that is gonna give me the strenght and anger to take part I again......

Hi Elto,

thank you.

I know exactly what you mean, but I am so use to hard working. In my country we do not have assistants, so you have an idea of hard working , especially if you have to work in one of those called "popular clinic" ( I did for a while), when you do not have schedule and MUST see all the patients that show up during that day.
As an assistant, I have seen so many wrongs procedures have been done, it is hard to be quiet, but ... I work in an ortho office and one day I had to fit a band over a molar with a small cavity on the buccal, the doctor said that wasn't a cavity, so I did.
I also hate when I am doing something my way and the doctor says that it is wrong, when it is not. It is just another way of doing and obtain the same results. I notice that here they do not see the big picture, they are too much books and not reality. I learned reality in my country, like we say, "we need to learn how to get milk from stones", and we do.
I want so bad to work as a dentist, but we never know, right?
As a hygiene, I can make my work well and the doctor's part is his/her problem. But this is just a thought, I am fighting for my license dental license now. We all are, right? 😉

That's why it is better to get the DH license before it is too late...
What I feel now it is that this fight is against myself....I mean, I am my worst obstacle to reach my goal......Just those that are persistent get into school....Don't you feel the same way sometimes? Don't you feel that at some point you are gonna get "comfy" working in what you are working and forgetting your dream?
Right now I am so "desperado" that I am considering to re-do the hole career.....Back to year 1!!!!! Or doing something in a professional level in a field different to dentistry.....Somebody told me that with my credentials I could do 1 1/2 years of college and get a degree as registered nurse......I don't know if this is really possible.......Maybe in other health related areas???
Don't take me wrong, I loooooove dentistry but I hate the idea of being "stock" in a technical level when I have the opportunity to get a professional degree (and a professional paycheck) in another field..... Sound I crazy???? I hope this "revolutionary" ideas don't go against the rules of the forum and I get kicked off....😀

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. It sure will!!!

And yes, what you said about getting comfy in the hygenist job is a big reality. A lot of Hispanics dentists in Florida, begin as a hygenist to later move on and try to pursue a dental license. BUT, they'll get comfy and this process only gets harder and harder, so a lot of them just remain hygenists.

Chuchuca, I don't think you NEED to take a course for the hygiene thing, But those courses do exist. I remember seeing an anouncement on the internet. I'll see if I can find the website.

Also, there are dental decks for hygiene exams. Go to their website and to find out some info.

Here's that link Chuchuca, here's what she says about the course

http://www.janewrdh.com/index.html

MY FLORIDA STATE DENTAL OR DENTAL HYGIENE BOARD LAW COURSE is typically a 1 day course which covers the important laws and rules that the Florida Laws and Jurisprudence Exam address. The clinical portion of the exam is covered (for perio and prophylaxis/root planing) and special attention is paid as to how to make the patient "board examiner perfect."

Also if you a search on Google for something like ''florida+dental+hygienist+license+course'' a bunch of things will come up.

any national board dental hygiene review materials on sale here? i have a friend who needs it.

hey elto, don't be frustated and give up !!!since u r in fl and working as a DH,u r in a good position to apply to nova southeastern university in fort lauderdale florida.i know b'coz i applied when i was living there, and got accepted.they dp prefer fl residents or students they know.....no u don't have to have a green card or anything.i would seriously ask you to try to get a DH or even DA job at that same college, why?? b'coz this year nova accepted 9 foreign graduates, out of which 6 were either working as DA or doing AEGD in the same college.and i know that these applicants did not have high scores,b'coz i met them during my interview........so all the best, where there is a will there is a way........

Latinos del Mundo Unios

lets talk staright forward, I as a Venezuelan Dentist do admire how the masses of Indians or Hindus move together helping each other.

but one of the things I cant accept is why, and this is fairly true, we latins tend to give up very soon.

I am not trying to find my own inspiration here, I do already have it, and I plan to keep on working hard on it. I wanna be a Dentist in the U.S. and God is the only one who can stop me from reaching my goal no matter how much it takes to get there.

In three weeks I will take Part 2, and let me tell you boy, I am giving there my best shot.

we have to brake the myth of just being happy as hygienists, lets work hard, wanna know why?

1.-) First because this is what we want. this is what we came for.
2.-) We need to brake the myth, we can and will give more.
3.-) and lets finally not forget that the Hispanics are the biggest and fastest growing group in the U.S., waiting to be attended by those of us who make to thye top. OR SHOULD WE LET THE OTHERS DO THE JOB??????

NOW GRAB INSIDE YOUR BOWELS AND WAKE UP, ELTO THIS ONE GOES WITH YOU. I CAN BE A 100% SURE YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES, DONT GIVE UP FOR CHRIST SAKES.

I will keep you up until I get my scores (part 2) please sum on you words, I NEED TO HEAR YOUR VOICES,

LETS SHOW WHAT WE LATINOS ARE MADE OF....

DO WE AGREE???
OR SHOULD I SCREAM LOUDERRRRRRRRRR 😡 😡 😡 😡

NOW LET ME HEAR DOES COMMENTS THENNNNNNN :meanie: :meanie: :meanie: :meanie:
