So, I applied for a Tech Job at a Hospital last night. It's about 30 minutes from where I'll be going to school, but I'm not too worried about the drive. The starting pay is decent ($13) with a good bit of room for raises. The only thing that worries me is that I haven't worked in a hospital before. I obviously know the basics of IV admixture just from tech training (how to operate a flow hood, etc.) and of course I'd be willing to learn whatever they need me to (It was listed as Pharmacy Tech I, so it may not be IV admixture after all). They said "At least 1 year of relevant experience". I do have one year of relevant experience, but just not in a hospital. It did say they preferred certified techs, which I am. I think I may have a shot, but I'm not too sure. Have you guys ever heard of techs with retail experience being hired part time at a hospital? What sort of duties do your techs do in the hospital? Is there a difference practice-wise in terms of Pharmacy Tech I and Pharmacy Tech II?

Thanks for any help and advice you all can provide!

I am not sure if you meet the “relevant experience” clause from your description of your work experience.
However, if they decided to call you for an interview you may be able to convince them that you will bring value if given the opportunity to be trained.
It yes I have seen techs and RPHs with retail experience being hired in hospital and succeed.

You can google the daily responsibilities of a hospital pharmacy technician and I’m sure that will give you an insight.

I suppose it’s also based on size of hospital (more or less). At a level 1 trauma hospital I’ve worked inpatient from reconstitution / admixtures to simply doing INR (inventory reports) and filling Pyxis machines for late shift nurses. Once in awhile I compounded basic pastes and liquids but not as my normal routine. To each their own, mine was classified as a tech 1 position but I was also trained in the military setting so theirs that.

Yeah, I was leery about applying given my lack of hospital experience, but I figured the worst that would happen would be they say no and I just get a job at one of the 4 CVS' near my school, lol. I do think it's odd that even the entry level hospital jobs require hospital experience, lol. Hopefully they will like me and my resume and decide to give me an interview. I will update this thread when I hear back from them (hopefully with good news!)

Thanks so far for everyone's advice

Update!
This may be a bit of false hope here, but I applied to a Pharmacy Tech II position at the same hospital just for kicks. I got back a "Reviewed-Not Selected" Response, while on the one I first applied to it says simply "Recruiter Reviewed" and the job listing for the one I first applied to is now gone, and the latest one I applied to is still up. Maybe (hopefully!) This means they are still in the process of selecting me, as it was taken down a day or two after my app was reviewed. Here's hoping I get it, haha. And this hospital typically takes at least 2 weeks to get back to people from what I've seen.
