So here's the deal. I got accepted into MD school. I had a 2.45 undergrad GPA, from just being a careless, irresponsible, and immature college student early in my career as a psych major and accumulating so many D's, F's, and C's. I was also focused on my musical career which I definantely played on in my personal statement and secondaries.

What I think got me in:
-3.92 GPA for my last 60 credit hours, at my FIRST ATTEMPT at a premed curriculum. The problem is that even after getting these credits, my GPA got to 2.6 because I had so many low grades from my past that prevented my GPA from elevating.
-4.0 on my SMP program
-Interesting story, hobbies, etc.
511 MCAT first try, although really odd breakdown: (129, 123, 132 (100th percentile), 127)

Feel free to ask questions! There is indeed hope out there for those who put in 100% effort.

How'd you study (how long, what materials/resources did you use) for the MCAT?

Sent from my SM-G930P using SDN mobile

I used that one routine (I forgot the name) that is commonly used around here that uses TBR. I also did ALOT of practice tests. Altius was awesome. TPR science workbook was KEY.

Congrats on your acceptance! How long did it take you to complete everything? And did you complete your 60 credits as a full time student or just part time?

It took me a full year including summers to finish my prereqs, while studying for the MCAT that last Fall and spring.
So I did Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring. Then I took the MCAT that last spring/ early summer, and applied for the SMP program. That took a year.

I did FULL semesters (Full time):

Spring: Bio 100, Gen Chem 1, Physics 1
Summer: Physics 2 and Gen chem 2 (Straight hell)

Fall: Orgo, Anatomy/phys 1, Orgo lab, Cell bio, cell bio lab (7th level of hell)
Spring: Orgo 2, anatomy/phys 2 and Mcat study
Summer: MCAT + AMCAS and SMP Apps

Fall: SMP
Spring: SMP
Summer: Accepted.

Can you share where you got IIs and accepts? PM if needed. This will help me better advise future SDNers, especially ones who reinvent themselves.

In the mean time congrats!

Way to go!!! That is one hell of an accomplishment. GO CELEBRATE!!!!!!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Which undergrad class do you think helped more towards MCAT prep, Cell Bio or A&P? I'm taking a "human morphology and function" class which is basically just two semesters of human anatomy, mostly because I'm really excited about it (med school-type class) but also b/c the professor is well known and the class size is small. But a bonus in my mind is that it'll help tangentially towards MCAT prep.

Also, for someone not in need of GPA repair (e.g. me with a 3.6 cGPA) would you recommend an SMP or scribing during gap year?

I'm no expert on the subject, but a good SMP with a reputation of getting the top of the class into med school is a great ticket to acceptance. However, admissions committees hold clinical experience in high regard, so they are two different routes. Scribing opens a variety of doors, while doing good in an SMP will open doors to that particular school, and also will be a strong asset to your resume for next cycle should you not get in.

For undergrad classes...it's hard to say, but I think Cell bio, gen chem, and physics were most helpful. Meanwhile, orgo is helpful if you get an orgo heavy exam.

Congratulations on your accomplishment! You did really well to prove yourself from that 2.45 hole. Great job in pulling the 3.92 GPA and MCAT scores!!

So what did it take going from a 2.45 GPA to a 3.92 GPA? Did you only get accepted to the school you did the SMP in or did you get accepted into other allopathic schools?

I got waitlisted at a few allopathic schools too. Some kids in my SMP got 3.8's and didn't get in...so it wasn't a cakewalk, and the interview does matter.

What did it take? dedication, and a sincere admiration for the sciences. I was always a science guy, but come my teenage years my heart and mind wanted to get in touch with my artistic side, so I focused my efforts on songwriting and improving my chops as a songwriter; playing open mics and work with vocal coaches, etc.

I don't want to come off as jerking my own chain here, but I feel like my performance shows that I was always a "smart guy" so to speak, I just needed to place the effort. Also, I did NOT use any drugs like adderall or such. Also, consider that SMP programs are like russian roulette, because if you do bad you essentially ruin your chances of getting in anywhere.

No, your'e not jerking your own chain, I completely understand what your'e saying and I would feel the same way if I accomplished what you did. Congratulations by the way.

Congratulations!!! Can you please tell which college allows you to complete both Chemistry and Physics during the summer?
Thanks

I can't tell you specifics, but it's a state school. The school has a reputation of being difficult (at least in my state), so it isn't an easy solution.

Congratulations! I thought SMP had a minimum gpa for admission ( you typed you had a 2.6 even after your great 60 credits) but I realized I am wrong.

Now I feel worried bc it will have taken me ~ 2 years to finish my pre-reqs in 5/2019 (incl general requirements) instead of a year like you! Wow! Thank you for sharing your story.

Congratulations!
I am currently on the same boat as you. My cGPA is 3.121 and sGPA is 2.99. I will be attending SMP starting this summer and will be taking the MCAT this April.

Did you apply to medical schools the same cycle you were in SMP or after you completed the program? How did you report GPA if you applied the same cycle?

Do you have any advice on SMP and scoring high on the MCAT?

Congratulations on your acceptance and best of luck to you in medical school!

Congrats! Fellow current postbac student. Did you do any extracurriculars during your postbac/SMP?
