I didn't realize cheating was so rampant in undergrad...

I'm naive I guess. I'm also a non-trad returning to school after many years.

I was studying for Orgo last week and a girl at the next table had a question for me. I went to help her and she had a picture of the exam on her phone. One of her buddies in the other section took a pic of the exam and sent it to her. I was a bit shocked and surprised they would take that risk.

Today one of my lab mates texted me that she had some helpful info for tomorrow's Ecology exam. She then called me and said she went to ask the professor a question and noticed a pile of exams on his desk. I guess there was a crowd around him and she decided to take a pic of the first page that showed. She offered to send it to me and I declined. I wouldn't want to risk getting caught. Just F'n study!

It doesn't happen in just undergrad. Just look up "dental school cheating" in google. It's much easier to cheat these days with cell phone cameras and the internet. You don't have to swipe physical copies of the test anymore. Just one leak and everyone can have it the next day.

lol nothing beats the kid who wore a coat with taped pages on the inside to my econ final when it was like 90 degrees outside and when there was NO AC

it's sad, but what are ya gonna do? just have to hope that they'll get chewed out for it one day

Yeah you'll see it everywhere. Even in dental school. I know people who are in dental school and cheat all the time. Old exams given to them from upper class men, its really cut throat b/c everybody wants to specialize and will do anything they can to achieve it.

I personally am non-traditional also and had the chance to cheat in undergrad, but decided not to, I rather just study and have a clear conscious.

There was a girl at my undergrad who wore a short miniskirt and taped some notes inside her thigh for an exam. A TA suspected that she was cheating, but of course he couldn't make her lift up her skirt to be sure.

It happens.

Old exams are nothing new and they aren't cheating. It's not like they are answers for tomorrows exam. They are probably the best study guides you will use for classes.

It really sucks when classes are curved and you know many people are cheating.

Also, I don't understand why professors that re-use old exam questions let students keep exams. It makes it really unfair for the rest of us that don't have access to the old exams. Just write new spins on old questions, but re-using them verbatim just seems lazy to me.

I agree w/ the verbatim thing. If they didn't give you the test back you would not be able to learn from your mistakes; this is definitely true in DS when you want to know where you messed up. And most material they want to test you on has already been said in some form or another which forces professors to make ridiculously confusing tricky questions which I'm sure are a delight to write.

I think cheating happens because some professors are lazy and don't change exams. Often times they are too busy to write new exams since they have research and other projects.

It is not cheating if you have old exams that the teacher gave back to students. If they choose o reuse old questions, that' their choice. This happened in cell bio in the fall where I had the same teachers test from the last 2 years and he recycled questions because he was lazy. We asked him if we could use his tests and he said well i handed them back didn't I. If they don't pass back he exam and students have it somehow that is cheating. Or the the OP said a student took a picture earlier. Or for instance the other day in a psychology class we took a test and the teacher let us take it home... I new of several people that were taking the test later in the day... Not hard to get your hands on that test.

Umm the picture of the test they didn't take yet IS cheating. And giving a test you just took to people who will take it later that day is cheating as well. I think any honor board would agree w/ me there.

Who starts a thread like this unless they're cheating themselves, be wiery of those who point the finger

Ur right, you ARE naive. It happens, it's unfair, it sucks for kids who honestly study

just worry about yourself. and maybe your wife and children if you have those.

replace cheating with drugs, rape, etc. the world is a surprising place

I know this is a lame cliche but it's just simply the truth. Cheaters never prosper. Anyone that I have known that has cheated has payed for it some day later down the line. It'll catch up some day.

It's nice to think that karma will come back to bite them. But most people do get away with it if they're smart and not obvious about it. That's life. I know plenty of people who have cheated in undergrad and they're all in med school, dental school, graduate programs, whatever. I'm pretty sure a thunderbolt isn't going to come strike them tomorrow.

The lack of character a person that cheats has will bite them in the you know what eventually. Might not be today or tomorrow, but it will catch up with them.

Lol you think that is cheating? I have seen kids take adderall right before the test so they can focus more. The **** is wrong with these kids? Some of them are pre-meds and many of them were Neurobio kids. They know what this does to them. They know the risks, they just don't think or care.

Just do your work and let the cheaters cheat. They're always gonna find some ridiculous way to cheat, but all this superficial crap will only take them so far. They'll either get caught some time and change or they'll end up being bad dentists/doctors. Maybe you are naive, but just maintain your integrity and do your best don't let a couple dishonest kids change your outlook.
