I do NOT recommend UMDNJ's grad school

"Also, the neighborhood is pretty awful...I mean it's Newark. Everytime I go to McD's there's some random person bugging me to give them money. One time a woman wouldn't leave me alone till I gave her a dollar. "

next time, you ask her for a dollar, because you can tell her that you need a dollar to make a phone call. i read it from somewhere on here.

however, this part has nothing to do with the program. many urban universities have problems like that.

"The facilities at the school are pretty rundown, ....... People illegal park all the time!!!"

once again, those kinds of problems can happen everywhere. you are studying there because of their programs. you are not there, because you like the city. or stay there for your honeymoon.

Yeah when I wrote that I wasn't quite happy with the school...especially administration, but overlooking the evilness that goes behind the scenes with the people who run the offices, the professors are nice and I've had an overall good experience with the classes I've taken....and you know what... it looks like I'm going to be attending medical school here after all!!!

Hey abbeacon,

I'm applying this summer.
Heinrich strongly suggested getting an LOR from Ingoglia, but I most likely won't be able to, so yeah nothing I can do.
Well, I feel I have the best chance of getting into NJMS. I would love to go to a school in NYC, but I doubt I could get into any, I wouldn't mind going to either NJMS or RWJ, I could see myself happy at NJMS. It's a good school and I'm already familiar with the professors. I mean you got into several med school...what do u think are my chances of getting into NJMS or any other schools??? 29 MCAT, 3.8 grad gpa, 3.23 undergrad gpa, and I have a bunch of EC's (heinrich told me I was ok with that). Oh and another question...How did you send your recommendation letters out. There's no pre-health committee at UMDNJ, so I was going to send mine out through my undergrad school...but then Heinrich told me I shouldn't. I should just send them out seperately because the dean who would be writing my letter probably wouldnt right a strong lor since its been almost two years since I last saw him. What did you do and what do you think? And how many lor's did u get?

found you! you rock! (=

Well Good Luck!!! I hope you got in!!!

Which school do u think is better overall....Robert Wood or NJMS??? NJMS will give u alot of great clinical experience, but RWJ is located in a better neighborhood and has slightly better facilities. Academics in general will be the same at both schools because lecture is lecture and what u learn is basically the same.

abbeacon lol You've totally killed my hopes..

But I have some questions for you if you don't mind:

1) Would going to Rutgers somehow help you because the schools are affiliated and students are coming from a state school?
2) Why did you choose NJMS over RWJMS? Did NJMS just seem more appealing at the time?
3) What would be a good/safe GPA & MCAT score for the NJ resident to get accepted to NJMS (and if you know, RWJMS)?
4) Are the students at NJMS gunners who really just want to beat everyone else in everything?

i can answer this one easily...NO...they actually cooperate with each other...i have heard this from other current med students, and I have seen it. I mean of course there will be a few gunners in every school.

Wait why would u think NJMS students would be gunners and not RWJ cause RWJ is harder to get into so by default would have "smarter" students and perhaps more gunners.

Sorry to kill your hopes--although it's been so long since I've been on sdn that I don't recall what I said...

but to answer your questions:
1) I don't think going to RU helps or hurts your chances at getting into the masters program or the NJ medical schools. UMDNJ/RU are both funded by the state, but are NOT affiliated with each other. There was a big uproar last year about merging all the state institutions (UMDNJ/RU/NJIT) into the Univ of NJ, but that was met with strong resistance at each of the individual schools... but I'd say that RU Newark/NB are both represented quite well in my class

2) more clinical experience early in your pre-clin years, hospital that is right next door to the medical school, better learning atmosphere, nicer people, proximity to NYC, opportunity to work in the community. and to be honest, I developed a level of comfort during the masters program that I just didn't feel when I visited rwj (and I really tried to find reasons why rwj was a better fit for me, but just couldn't). This isn't to knock rwj, but I didn't feel it was a good fit for me. Plus, I didn't really appreciate my rwj tour guides (on each of my tours--one in nb and one in piscataway) bashing newark and NJMS at every possible opportunity. I let them have their say, but when I said I was a grad student up in newark, they pretty much shut up.. it irritated me that they really didn't try to sell their school, instead preferring to bash NJMS.

3) I think it really does depend on your entire application (e.g., LORs, clinical/life experiences, research, etc). I know people in my class with 25's on their mcat, and people with mid 30s.. I don't honestly know peoples' gpas... I think on the njms website, they list the average mcat as a 29 and gpa as a 3.5..

4) I think you'll find gunners in any school you attend. But the overall atmosphere is collegial at NJMS.. I don't think intelligence has anything to do with gunning--rather, I think it's maturity and the ability to take a step back and realize, "hey, I'm in medical school.. it's OK if I'm not honoring every class, AOA, in 30 different clubs, etc"... and while these people exist in every class, I think they eventually become marginalized. One thing that's been refreshing at NJMS is their focus on nontrad students, who bring a different perspective on life (e.g., coming from a previous career, being married + kids, etc).. this might help to minimize gunning at NJMS...

hope this helps..
