...but I am at a crossroads as to whether or not I should apply now or later to a rolling admissions school if I want to be able to hear back from other schools without having to give a decision to the RA school. I fear that if I get in now (yeah, terrible thing to "fear", I know) I won't have had enough time to hear back from other schools that I am more interested in being accepted to... But then again, maybe I won't get into those schools and then I will be screwed anyway... Has someone been in this situation?

Commenting to follow! One of my schools is rolling, but it's also near the bottom of the choice list.

If it were me, absolutely apply early. Then if you are accepted you can say yes to the slot and pay the deposit. That way you at least have a school. If you end up getting into another school, you can turn the first down and accept the second. (I did this when I applied. It was well worth the deposit loss for the surety of having a place).

thanks, I didn't realize that if I made the deposit, I would be able to decline further down the road. I would rather do the same as you

My advice would be to ask the schools that you're considering in order to find out the timeline of things. Some schools will tell you how long it takes for them to make a decision once they receive your app and how long they give you before you have to send a deposit. I think finding out the logistics helped me to figure out when exactly to apply to certain schools. I have even heard from some schools that they do have a tendency to offer extensions this time of year because they understand.
