I don't like it when people suggest, to those who are applying late or don't have high stats: "apply to NYU or BU" First of all, it is not easy to get into either NYU or BU. I know people with worse stats who got accepted to UCONN and NOVA but were denied by BU!
Second of all, there are other schools who have the March 1st application deadline! So just because NYU and BU have the late application deadline, it does not mean you will get in.

Why does this bother you? For someone with marginal stats, BU and NYU are great schools to apply to. Large class size, lower GPA average, accept lots of students because many people apply as a backup and turn them down. They are expensive, so even more people turn them down when they get into another school. They are also solid schools that will give you your degree and let you live your dream.

They may not be easy to get into, but they are easier than most.

BU is a good school, definitely!!! 🙂

jaap, I agree with your points. However, when people say "apply to NYU or BU", I think they are implying that they accept everyone. Hence, it brings down the value of the school.

I get mad when people specifically put down individual schools (usually NYU). However, I dont think that people are putting down those schools when they suggest to apply there. Statistically the schools do have lower averages, it just make sense for someone with a lower average to apply there rather than Harvard or an out of state state school.

In the past I have advised people to apply to NYU and BU if they have lower stats. This is no knock on the schools, its just based on their average entering gpas and dats. I'm sure NYU and BU are both great schools and anyone who graduates from them will make great dentists.

I have a hard time following your logic. You are having some amount of trouble getting into dental school, or so it would seem from your previous posts. Now, all of your previous posts have been about BU's waiting list and NYU. It would seem you are taking everyone's advice, or at least following a course similar to what they reccomend. Yet you criticize people that give this advise. I understand you are defensive about the schools you may attend and the fact that you have yet to get accepted, but let's not go overboard.

Or perhaps, you are trying to discourge others to apply to increase your own chances. Ah-hah! 😀 🙂

I agree that it does lower the perceived value of the schools when people say "apply to BU and NYU". However, those schools do have standards that are lower than most other schools. People say this to give the applicant the best chance to get admitted somewhere. However, it is also important to note that all dental schools are good. There is no such a thing as a "bad" dental school. Same goes for medical school. They all give you first class education. It is up to the student to take advantage of that.

We're simply trying to provide the best for our fellow SDNers (esp. one with low stats) the best chance to land a seat in a dental school. At the same time, we can't deny the fact that boston and nyu is easier to get into than alot of other schools, that is not to say that theyr'e bad schools. They're just plain easier to get into. 😀

Simply due to the tuition and location (living expenses). But how cool is it to live in Boston or NYC? 2 of the most unique cities in the US!!

I'm finding this conversation interesting, to say the least.

Primarily because I consistantly get ripped to shreds for suggesting that schools have high standards and that sub-par applicants don't/won't have a field-day in the addmission process.

In response to my posts, multitudes have sighted NYU and BU as evidence that the admissions process isn't as difficult as I have claimed it to be.

Now, a poster confesses that she doesn't like it when NYU and BU are used as evidencery exhibits.

So, if I understand this correctly: dental school isn't hard to get into, but we shouldn't talk about that fact openly. Rather, we should pretend it IS difficult to gain admittance, because discussing schools that accept applicants on the lower end of the spectrum causes us to feel bad about our profession, and specifically, lower the value of said schools.

This is much better than biochemistry.

Not sure what you mean by this Gavin, I understand what you wrote, just not sure why you wrote it. I guess I have no idea if you are trying to validate a point, or just making an observation or what.

However, I dont think it backs up your vastly overstated (in my opinion) views on how hard it is to get into dental school. If that was even your intent with this post.

talking about stats, Nova and Arizona have lower DAT than BU. if i remember correctly, these 2 schools' entering classes have AA around 18, whereas BU is 19.

As one of those underperforming types on this board(trying to reverse that). I think this disrespectful when I have to work hard to even make it into their radar screen(BU and NYU).
