I failed chemistry 2 twice... can I still get in?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Among the required pre-med courses, Orgo is definitely the hardest. I really don't think anyone should make serious plans for med school until they have gotten through it.

We all know that Orgo separates the men from the boys (and women from the girls). But to say that it is needed to seriously consider medicine is a joke. The medical school curriculum as well as the MCAT is more anti-orgo than anything. The MCAT has decreased the amt of emphasis placed on Organic to the point of having 1-2 passages per MCAT. Do you need to know the difference between S1 and S2 in order to do well in med school? Hell no. I have talked to numerous physicians who say that they would be lucky to pass an Organic class today. Memorize your **** to do decent in the class, but don't pass your life ambitions on one chemistry course.

well Adam's response makes me feel better. I plan on retaking orgo 1 and taking orgo 2 in the summer while studying for the MCAT (and taking it) and completing my application. I can't wait until it's over to decide. But I am really really scared.:scared:

I think the OP needs to ask himself why exactly he wants to go to medical school. From what I can see, his heart's not really into it. He voluntarily hasn't put forth enough effort to excel in his classes and has failed one of them twice. In my eyes, medicine is not something you do half-heartedly. Thus, OP, you need to sit down and figure out what it is you want out of medicine and reevaluate whether medical school is the only place you can get those things. It'd be a shame to waste your time and money on trying to make up for two "fail"s, just to finally get to medical school and find out you're in the wrong place.

Look, I was equally harsh when I read the original postings. However, I think the OP is painfully aware of the difficulties that he has put himself through, and what needs to be done. Whether he actually takes those action steps is entirely up to him. I agree that it would behoove him to reevaluate his goals and choose realistic ones. This is not a revelation by any means.

Let's not be too quick to condemn the OP. He has a decent record besides what he did to himself with general chemistry. He admitted he didn't engage fully in his academic work. It can be overcome; people have overcome much greater problems with their academic record. Don't believe me? Just do a search, or look at some of the success stories on the non-trad board. Plain and simple, it can be done, if you have the heart and will to make it so. Getting accepted into medical school is most certainly one of the more difficult goals to accomplish, but it is sermountable for most.

OP, yes, please give your choice to pursue medicine due consideration, not because you have made mistakes in the past, but because that's what we should all do. If you find that you have the heart to make a lifelong commitment to medicine, then your recent events will just be a blip on your journey. You must be willing to do whatever it takes, with little exception. You need to find your will.

Good luck!

I failed it the first time because I couldnt make it to class. I was immature and a ******.

I failed it the second time because after I changed schools, I changed majors. My advisor told me that the grade would not go on my transcript for a new major.

so here I am. I failed chem 2 twice. I know that I can make an A in the class. I guess you can call it a second wind for academics now that I know I want to be a doctor.

gpa otherwise is around a 3.4. is it still possible to go to med school? or should I start looking at carribbean med schools? or could I even get into them?

Start looking at caribbean and osteopathic.

...[could] crummy chem history would keep me out of med school? even caribbean?

Not even mental ******ation would keep you out of Caribbean medical school.

I found Orgo to be a ton easier than GenChem. By doing tons of problems from the textbook, you learn the reactions, and once you know those it's just puzzle solving....

B+ / B in Gen Chem
B+ / A- in Orgo

The Chem professor I had for both semesters of orgo and 2nd semester gen chem has only given out five A's in Orgo in the past 20 years, so I know I earned those grades.

I have the same problem i have 4ws on my community college transcript with 1 W at the university i also repeated chem 2 three times and genetics once, i was actually supposed to complete undergrad after 1 yr but i added one major and a two minors. i ended up with a GPA of 3.71 i took the MCAT and scored a 513 i feel i got no hope because of the dings and red flags on my transcript.
