Well first, calm down lol. Call the program if you have the number and f/u with an email. Explain your circumstance and how you're very interested in the program but there was misunderstanding. I'm more than sure they'll understand.

you have an EMAIL from the guy saying you could add them later. aka you have proof of misinformation. 99% sure you'll be fine

Nothing to worry about, believe me. Just ask the program coordinator if your letter writers could submit their recommendation directly via email since you have already completed the application.

Hopefully you can still apply to this fellowship after talking with the program coordinator. But even in the worst case scenario in which you are not considered eligible, your shot at med school and your overall career trajectory is unlikely to change. Just make the best of the situation either way, there are plenty of other opportunities floating about. Stay positive and good luck!

Their website says that they will absolutely not accept letters via email…do you think they might be willing to re-open the letter link for me?

I'm afraid this might be a good excuse for them to just kick me out and save them the task of reading through my essays, since they get 1000 apps. I'm not sure if most program directors think like this, but it sure is upsetting.
Hmm.. Not sure if they would reopen the links. That might be a bit tedious for them. In my experience, programs tend to be a bit lenient with situations like this because PI's are very busy people and sometimes they forget to send their letters on time. With that said, programs are sometimes willing to accept letters from the PI's directly. The worst they could say no.

There are still some programs accepting applications for what it's worth. Good luck.

Wait until you hear back from the guy you emailed, his response is all that matters - I assume this official internet-free conference won't last forever.

Sometimes things don't go the way you hoped and you have to deal. The way you're reacting is a little over the top, but if you feel that it's justified you can go ahead and include this experience in your "time I overcame a difficult situation" secondary prompt for med school.
