  1. Resident [Any Field]
I'm waiting on finishing up my masters before applying to an MD/PhD program. So that means I won't be even starting an MD/PhD until I'm 28. Man oh man, that makes me feel old.

Anyone else in the same boat? Or will I be the only geezer starting Residency at about 35?

I'm still only 21, but if I don't get in this year, I'm just gonna get my PhD and then do the MD so that I don't have to ride that boat. But I feel your old age pain. Just thinking about at least 12 more years of school and residency before I get my first REAL job makes me feel old too. :scared:

Yeah, that sucks. Sometimes I envy those people who majored in a field where they can get a job for something like ~50k immediately after they graduate from college.

OK that doesn't really help. :lol

No but seriously, don't think about it as a transition phase. 7/8 years in your 20s/30s are just too much to be considered a transition phase. Think about as a "starting job" and make sure you enjoy the process.

Yeah, my best friend has a computer science degree and codes like a ninja does ninjitsu! He's charging about $60/hr right now to make web sites for yuppies.

It's not how old you are. It's how old you look. sorry, but it's true.

🙂

Exactly!!
I'll be 47 when I start residency..........................but I'll look 32!😉

Just do it. You'll be 4 yrs older anyway; so you can be 4 yrs older without an MD and feeling old, or you can be older with your MD. The key is if you like medicine, do it; if you are feeling sorry for yourself about getting older, then you will be miserable no matter what and trying out the latest botox.

I switched road maps in academic life in order to be an MD. I'm older, but still looking good.

I already have my Ph.D doing some post doc right now. If all goes well I'll probably start medical school around 31.

Are you already accepted somewhere? Is the masters in the same field in which you hope to get a PhD? If so, you're totally wasting your time.

I started my MD/PhD in 2000 when I was 28 (plus I'm a married woman w/life outside of school). I'm now in MS3, and by the time I graduate from Med school in 2008 I'll be 36. My plan is to be done w/residency before I'm 40. Fellowship at 40 is OK, though

btw you may get your PhD coursework shortened w/the Master's, depending on what field you go into.

Good luck :luck:

Buck up, kid; you're definitely not alone. I'll be right there with you. I'm an M1 now at age 31, so I'll be graduating and starting residency at age 35. 🙂

I finished my PhD and was working before I went to Med school; I'm older than dirt. So, do what you like. And, use Oil of OLay.

Okay, I feel better 🙂 Time to get back to studying to improve my 30P score on the MCAT. And the master's I should hear if I'm accepted any day now, registration is late next week for Spring Semester. The Master's is to over shadow a poor undergrad GPA. To top it all off, I found a 51 year old saying the same thing on the "Nontraditional" board.

I got it all out of my system now 🙂

I will finish my PhD in the spring and I'll enter med school at 26. SO I feel ya.... But I have to say I THANK GOD for every second of the day. I would not change the way HE has planned my life for the world. 😍
