I was doing urinalysis on this pregnant woman from Somalia with some major hematuria, expecting a UTI or something, when I spotted a rather large organism with flagella and see-through organs in the microscope! I've never seen a schistosome, let alone a LIVE one! Man, this is why I want to be an ID guy!! It's good to be alive! Anyone seen some cool parasites like this?

Yea! Parasites are so cute. Some of them, anyway. I've seen some cool ones, but only in animals.

I remember the first time I saw Hairy cell leukemia...my prof told me i would never see one in my entire career, and my first day at work I did...hahaha

finding sperm in a 5y/o urine was not cool though, I feel better now that that son of a bitch is caught but that made me cry right at my scope

A side project I had in my lab was with this protist called vorticella....it has this cool Ca dependent spasmesome that projects it through the water with a spring....it is the most powerful machine in the world when scaled

edited for stupidity.

I'm waiting to see an organ procurement (organs surgically removed from a dead patient) Should be fun 🙂

you're kidding right? if not elaborate.

Yeah, what the heck are you talking about?

I'm guessing the urine sample came from a girl...

he was raped, douchebags

Please explain how "douchebag"

If a five year old boy was raped, why would there be semen/sperm in his urine?

If a five year old girl was raped, why would there be semen/sprem in her urine?

I can see residual semen finding its way into a girl's urethera, but it would be washed away the very next time she micturated. I have no idea why there would be semen from another man in a little boy's urine.

must have been a girl who was raped. The urine, if not cathed, will show sperm in it.

what does all this have to do with pre-allo?

Have you read the book "M.D." by B.H. Kean? It is all about the exploits of a very famous ID guy. Here is a snippet about the book:

This thoroughly entertaining biographical account follows Kean from his medical christening at Gorgas Hospital in Panama in the 1930s, through his professional development as pathologist and parasitologist, to his private practice on New York's Park Avenue. Four of the 19 chapters, as well as the prolog, detail Kean's involvement in the flight and medical treatment of the Shah of Iran. Kean's trials, triumphs, misadventures, detective work, and sometimes downright shenanigans are sure to engross...

That totally sucks about the sperm in the 5 yo's urine! I'm always a little wary about that when doing a UA on a kid (esp with the patient population in this part of the city, bunch of wackos out here!). I find sperm in adult women's urine all the time. It takes a lot to wash that stuff out.

The book sounds interesting, maybe I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion dnelson!

I also see Trichomonas from time to time, but it's not as interesting. BTW, it's been a couple days since I found the Schistosomes and they're still alive (I kept the urine sample in the lab for ID and personal amusement)! Amazing!

Perhaps doing veterinary med would be nice? 😀

I'm still waiting to see the status of Jason Giambi's tests reported. That would be pretty strange if he managed to get E. histolytica somehow.

I heard that on sportscenter last night....some other guys have it. That is random
