Hey guys,

I hope all is well and hope you are having a great weekend so far.

I have posted regarding my gpa many times. However, I did not notice my mistake until today.

I am retaking classes right now. Even if I finish retaking classes by June, my GPA will be still around 3.0 or at most 3.1

With MCAT above 30, do I even stand a chance?

I want to apply next cycle.. is Australia or Caribbean school option the only choice I have now?

Thank you for reading this!

I would recommend doing a post-Bach before ever looking into a Carrib. School. Patience is virtue, my friend.

Yes do retakes and then a Post Bac (do well in post bac 3.7+GPA) and then apply. If you have a 27+ mcat or similar on new scale you should be solid.

I would not do Caribbean because their attrition rates are high, last thing you want is a lot of debt and no degree. Plus with this whole merger thing matching is going to be even harder, more DO schools are opening making it that much harder for Carib grads.

I personally would go into a different career before entering Carib.

I have over 30 on the MCAT. I remember reading some post bac programs stating that they require 3.0 or higher.

I think I can bring my gpa upto 3.1 after the retakes. Should I give a try and apply?

If anything, I will apply for some DO SMP programs/post-bac programs and U of Q ochsner?

There aren't any DO SMP programs, nor are their MD SMP programs. SMP's are unique programs, though they may be hosted by a school that also has an MD or DO program, and there may be a connection with said program to medical school admissions (i.e.: some programs like Cincinnati have increased acceptance into their medical school with successful completion of their program and a certain MCAT score). Also, post bac and SMP programs are not the same. From my understanding, Postbacs are programs where you take premed classes from undergrad and SMP programs have courses you would eventually be taking in medical school.

Eh, maybe I can clarify this a little bit. There are many colleges that have SMPs ( Special Masters Programs) almost specifically for a second chance to get into medical schools. There are colleges out three that say if you have above a x.xx gpa, then you will automatically matriculate. Then again a huge pitfall in doing SMP is that if you goof up or your GPA isn't very high, then you basically just ruined your chances for medical school (not always, though). A post-Bach is exactly what it sounds like. A post-Bach is just taking some classes after you have been awarded your bachelors degree. Many people do what they call "DIY" (do it yourself) post-Bachs where they just sign up for classes they enjoy or need for another degree and try to score all A's in every class. You can use this time to either make up classes, which would be a very good idea because then you would be REPLACING a bad grade with a good grade and it would increase your AACOMAS gpa much quicker than taking new classes, or, you could take new classes to show your improvement over time with tougher upper-level courses, but no matter what you need to excel in school in any post-Bach or SMP program.

Yep, exactly what I was trying to say but failed to put in the right words haha!

This is a very good explanation. I have to admit I was unclear on what an SMP is. Thanks for clarification!

Thank you for the explanation. I am well aware of the differences between SMP and postbac. Again, it's just that many post bac programs near my area require gpa above 3.0
SMP or I should say MHS or MSMS programs near my area require gpa over 2.75 with guaranteed interview.
I am currently retaking classes at a CC to improve my gpa. The classes I need to remediate are not offered at other colleges or just I have not been so successful finding the matching corse just yet.

I want to give a try and apply upcoming cycle. If I don't get in then I will apply for SMP or a college that has courses my home university has or apply to U of Q ochsner

Not sure if this is any help for you but my stats: 3.1c/3.0s/4.0 SMP/30 MCAT. 5 Interviews, 2 WL, 1 Acceptance, 2 haven't heard. So... I'm inclined to say that you should be able to get into a D.O. school. An SMP will help and I think my situation is evidence to support that. Maybe you could do it without though...not sure. I was sub 3.0 before the SMP. PM if you have questions.
