For the first time, I called and asked a dentist if I can go for shadowing or volunteer job, and he said YES!
I am going there on Thursday....kakaka~

Congratulations. Learn as much as possible.

before you start, be on clear terms what you are going for.. just shadowing OR volunteering??? hell of a difference.

shadowing!!!!

Comet208, what's the difference?

Congrats and good luck. 🙂

what's the difference between the two? shadowing and volunteering? can it be both?

Just ask the dentist while youre there in the office if theres anything you can do to help, as a courtesy.

And do yourself a courtesy and speak properly while you're in there. If you speak vocally as poorly as you speak in text, the dude will probably think you have downs and will not let you come back nor will he write you a letter of rec.

That's great. You've got a good start. When are you applying for Dental School...next year?

Make sure you bring your hepatitis vaccination record if you want to help. My boss won't even let the receptionist in the room without proper documentation.

I would imagine the difference b/w shadowing and volunteering is whether you could pick up an instrument, drill, etc. or not. I could be wrong.

I am applying after 2 years.(i just finished freshman)

Congrats Joon.

Woah, guys, some of you need to lighten up. So English isn't his first language...BIG DEAL. The dude has better grades than a lot of people who are born in the states so don't think any less of him because he was born in another country. Sometimes the differences between the states and Canada are so clear. I'm not knocking the states but, up here, no one would ever degrade someone like this.

Anyways, good luck joon. You'll get in no problem, just keep at it! And to my american friends, I was in your country yesterday for the DAT (buffalo) and I must say that I did appreciate the lower prices 😀

If you don't like the way "we" treat people, then maybe you shouldn't apply to "our" dental schools and stay in Canada.

Typical response. Well, there are good and bad people in every country (despite what you may believe) and I refuse to give in to people like you 🙂 Anyways, the US would not be what it is without immigrants. Think about all the Indian and Chinese doctors and dentists you have. Some of them have accents, big deal 🙂

Anyways, I have no problems with the US. It's a wonderful country with many opportunities. I don't have time to concern myself with politics and things of that nature. I just thought it was rude for people to insult the guy because english isn't his first language. I mean...come on people...it's no great achievement. You were born where you were, you had no control over it. Besides, how good is your Korean? 😀

As a Canadian living in the US, I have to agree that there seems to be a lot more hostility down here.... *cough* 😀

Shadowing: you are there ONLY to observe. cannot touch anything, nor do you have any responsibilities. The hours are not set and usually very limited.

Volunteering: you volunteer certain hours/days to carry out certain tasks at the office. you are given responsibilities and expected to do them. Volunteering is usually have a longer period.

usually people shadow first, and after they are more comfortable, they can ask to volunteer.

anything i might have left off?

I wasn't insulting him. I was asking if English was his first language. If it is not, then I can understand the way he writes because he probably sounds the way I sound when I tell someone something in Spanish.

Surely you mean shadow first, then volunteer?
Or even volunteer first, then shadow? 🙂

My point was, how do you know that all of the people throwing around insults were American? You were pretty quick to assume..................

And nothing pisses me off more than when somebody uses the resources of this great nation, then turns around and insults it. For example, the people that burn American flags in protest are hypocritical in that they are slandering a nation that will not persecute them for performing such a hanus act. Try doing that in North Korea and see how far that gets you.

He goes to a community college! Hello! Of course his grades are going to be higher.

First of all, your great nation charges out the ass for its "resources". Secondly, it amazes me that because someone wants to go to dental school in the US, he/she has to love everything about the country. The US is a good place to live but it is not perfect. No country is! One problem in the US is racism. Racism exisits everywhere in the world at different degrees.

I'm sorry it pisses you off that in order for me to get into an American school, I'll have to have better numbers than Americans. Sorry for paying double the tuition in some cases. 😀 The US benefits greatly from these people who "use her resources".

Anyways, I don't want to generalize. I'm sorry if you felt I was. I can just say that in my experience, race is more of an issue in the US than in Canada. Almost all of the interactions I have had with Americans have been pleasant (even this one) and it shows that I indeed do respect the US if I am willing to move away from my family for 4 years, pay crazy tuition, and call the US my home for that time. Either way, no hard feelings to anyone 🙂

No offense taken. And well said. 👍

yeah...the reason I go to community college regardless of the fact that I got accepted to UVA is becuz I don't have greencard. They want me to pay out of state tuition 🙁

my stupid lawyer went to jail... -_-; otherwise I would have gotten green card already. I heard that it only takes 1~2 years to get greencard but it has been 5 years since I came to the U.S.A ...how sad...i can't even get scholarship, financial aid. I tried to join army to pay for my tuition but they also require greencard xD

uhh... I've never met a protester that protests AGAINST the cuontry... they protest against somethign that they see which they think is stupid/harmful....

hell I'm a fan of the US of A, otherwise I wouldn't live here... but does that mean I won't go out and protest or call stupid **** (easy to do with the bush administration) out as I see it? no. heck I'm going to go burn a flag just to support the right to burn flags!

EXACTLY.

I believe ISUsteve's quote in his sig sums it up very nicely. it goes something like how one of the truest forms of patriotism is dissent.
If we hadn't believed in that principle there would be no America. Dont forget the founding fathers were in principle a bunch of British subjects who complained about living under British rule. They dissented.

I dont think we need to get political on this website, but you can't cross the line and bash some person from a foreign country and claim he's sucking resources. He's paying taxes isn't he??? He cant even get most resources because he's from overseas and on top of everything he has to face racism and people bothering him cuz of his race.
