After 3 months of being unemployed!!! im so excited to get my first real pharmacist job.

Any advice? How can I stay focus and do my best because it is only a temp position with the potential to go full time reg. and I would like to have health insurance eventually lol.

Congrats!

Do you have to relocate or commute a long distance?

3 months looking for a job? I bet next year, it's going to be 6 months for new graduates find a job

my guess is 9 months too. actually everyone i know is still jobless!!! unless they did a residency/fellowship.

Where are all the pre-pharms/pharm students who claim 'everyone gets a job in pharmacy' to rebut this (whilst they have no experience w/the job market, hence don't know what they're talking about)?:meanie:

NO ONE from your class got a job? I find this hard to believe.

Well, of my classmates (class of 2011), no one seemed to have too much trouble finding jobs. I know where most of the locals ended up. There was a huge cohort who moved back to California, and I have no idea what they are doing. Of my school's class of 2012, all of the students I know of have jobs, but again, I'm not sure about that California cohort.

i am not saying no one in my class got a job. im sure some did with their work in retail or hospital. but all my friends are still looking.

im not sure where you are from but im from philadelphia area. so there are a ton of schools. there is literally no full time jobs i know of. like i check all the job sites and all i get is part time or prn. i am getting recruited only for part time or prn or contract. it kinda sucks. hopefully the market will get better when everyone from pgy1 get placed in mid-jan

Indeed.com is not the way to look for a professional job. It's networking, networking, and networking.

Why do you think you and your friends had such trouble finding jobs? Unwillingness to relocate? Didn't work during school/no pharmacy experience?

I think it's intentionally misleading to say that "everyone you know" is unemployed, when clearly some of your classmates have jobs. How many people in your class do you think are actually still looking?

They all worked in a pharmacy. Some did hospital and there were no openings. Some did retail and their retails didn't hire them to philly so they are trying to seek employment still. Some stopped their retail jobs during the last year of school.

I can only name like 7 people that i know that have a job that didn't go straight to residency or fellowship. A majority of the nonresident/fellow population are unemployed. Most the class went to residency/fellowship so that helped (like 1/2 I would suspect). From me and my friends estimation about like 3/4 of the remaining 1/2 of the class is looking for a job. So maybe like 1/4 of the 1/2 of the class got a job from retail working or relocating. This is just an estimation of course because how many people want to shout out they are unemployed to everyone else. I can name a couple of people from 2011 that only work part time cause they can't find anything.

As for moving, it isn't so easy to move. Personally i wouldn't mind moving but every person wants someone who is licensed in that particular state....like I just got licensed for another state and that took awhile. Plus the recruiters don't even bother looking at ur resume if you aren't local (this doesn't include retail recruiters of course). I can atest for it. I applied to so many jobs in MD/NJ/DE and I got no calls back compared to PA.

Hmm well I went to an unranked school according to those *****s at USNWW and my class is 100% employed as of Tuesday. Looks like your classmates need to pull their heads out of their rear ends and get to work no pun intended.

I am sure all the unranked schools report 100% accurately too. According to them they are opened because there is a shortage of pharmacists in the country. I am sure their reports of being 100% employed are also just as accurate!

Yah, I would take a school's employment statistics with a grain of salt, people.

And congrats to the OP on the job!

Interestingly, I found my job on indeed.com. I didn't know anyone that worked there...

Should I start applying in the Spring? I graduate in 2013.

My school began in 1941 so we aren't new at all. Plus this info comes from the graduates themselves, not the school. Not one of my classmates is unemployed and I don't need my school to tell me that.

Probably depends on what you're applying for. I know a lot of retail interns got their job offers in fall/winter of the year before. Personally I didn't start looking until spring because I was so focused on getting into residency. It also seemed like the people who did try to look for jobs in advance didn't get one until spring or well into summer anyway.

I'll apply for some managed care residencies in Dec and then for some jobs in March. I think that is the best way to go.

Did you take your Naplex in June? I think that's a good month to take it on.

Yep, I took the Naplex and my home state MPJE in June. I mainly wanted to get boards out of the way as soon as possible.

Some guy in my class told me you can take the Naplex after you are done with 6 rotations. You do not need to graduate first. Is this true? I think he is mistaken....Can you take the Naplex before you graduate pharmacy school?

Straight from NABP website...

4. Can I register for the NAPLEX and MPJE prior to graduation?

You may submit your registration prior to graduating, but your state board of pharmacy will not confirm eligibility until you meet all graduation requirements.

HTH

I found my last two jobs on Indeed.com. Indeed is not some majical portal...all it does is collect together all the job postings out on the web. Monsterr, Career builder ect. Its not magic. You could find the same job postings by visiting the individual sites...Indeed just saves you time.

I do agree it is who you know not what you know that is the secret to getting a good job. Networking is the key!

You can not take the Naplex until your school certifies you to NABP. This does not happen until after graduation. I suppose you could talk to them and get them to do it sooner but I doubt they would.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess June is the best time to take the Naplex then? I think I'll take it then too.

Yeah, June is the best time to take the NAPLEX but there are limited appointments to take a test each day. I got my authorization to test on June 30th. The only options I was given in taking the NAPLEX was either July 3rd or August 30th.

June 30th or July 3rd is okay...but August would be too late!

I will be done with my rotations in mid March. I schedule my off block on the last block! lol...

I guess I can study from April to June for the Naplex and law exam. Is that enough time to study?

When do people take the law exam? In June too? 2 to 3 months enough time to study for those two exams?

I studied for the NAPLEX and MPJE combined no more than 1 week.

You prolly only need about a week or two in between the NAPLEX and MPJE for studying. Overall, just give yourself about a month though it's not entirely necessary cuz it's not like you're supposed to be relearning all of pharm school 😀

Yup, they were pretty easy. I took the MPJE about a week after I took the NAPLEX. Aced the NAPLEX, squeaked by the MPJE.

Good to know.

Is there a Kaplan book for the Naplex?

What book did you read for the law exam?

For the NAPLEX I used the RxPrep book a little bit, but the main thing was doing the Rx Prep Question Bank online. My school got it for us.

For the MPJE, I just used notes that I coerced out of some P1s.

The Kaplan book's pretty barebones, I don't think it went in depth enough on disease states/treatments. I borrowed it from the public library and all I remember was seeing a lot of tables/charts plus a strong insistence on reading through all the guidelines. That aside, one of my classmates used it as prep for the NAPLEX and passed, so maybe it's decent enough.

I took the CPJE so I didn't read any books but I managed to waste $50 on the Weissman one in anticipation

im gonna be forced to look for a new job soon

Serious question folks.

How diffcult is it to get a PBM job without a residency? Is a manage care residency required pretty much?

If it is I'll do one for sure. I want a PBM job too.
