I got a Vanderbilt interview!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the secondary about an hour ago, and I am, of course, totally excited! Gotta figure out my air plans soon, but probably will call up Vandy tomorrow. I look forward to hopefully meeting some of you, though having those essays done before the interview is sorta daunting!!!!!!!!!

Are most of you staying the night of your interview as well? I mean I'm flying in the night before and then I'm thinking about staying the night of my interview so I can explore the city.... are the rest of you just leaving after your interview or what?

I haven't booked a date yet, but I'm def looking fwd to meeting some more SDN "freaks" 😀

i was thinking of doing the same thing. lucky for me i'm driving in and don't have to be back in town at any given time. 😀 if i knew anyone was going to be there that night i would definitely plan on staying, but for now i'll just play it by ear.

Yah, I was thinking the same thing...geez I am pretty confused. If I stay the night and fly the next morning, then I miss another day of school (not that I really mind 🙂 but I know it will eventually catch up with me). And, hearing about Vandy's subsidized 2nd look weekend is pretty nice also. I was thinking about getting in early the day before the interview, checking out the area, and then leaveing right after the interview (I live on the West Coast, so the flight times and time zone changes are long too!)

Hey cal,

have you picked an interview date yet? I emailed to request one and I got an email back giving me which dates were closed and the basic interview day schedule. I guess that means any days not listed are available...c'mon 9/7...

vanderbilt is a rolling admissions school, right?

To those who received interviews, did you first get an email stating that your amcas had been received and would be reviewed in x weeks. did you get any emails from vandy before your invite?

I personally did not, the letter just showed up in the mail one day.

I interviewed last year at Vandy, but got the good ol' letter of rejection. However, for those who are interviewing for the first time, the interview day was fairly short. Everyone at Vanderbilt is very kind. My interviewer even got me directions to the country music hall of fame. 👍

What up,
First of all, I am interviewing next Tuesday at Vandy and was just curious as to whether any of you guys wanted to hang out during down time. Also, and I'm not trying to be a dick here, but I was also wondering whether anyone else has/gets to meet with the dean one-on-one. I got a call this morning to schedule a meeting with him on my interview- I couldn't have done anything deserving of administrative censure yet so I am hoping that this is a positive development... Did someone pull strings for me? I kind of hope not...

Count me in!! I scheduled mine for 8-24, the day before my classes start at Vandy. I love not having to travel (other than hiking across campus) to my first interview. I probably got the weirdest notification. What you are about to read is true. Names have been changed to protect the innocent.

I'm at home now, and my travel plans depended on whether and when I interviewed at Vandy. And of course my AMCAS address is my school box! Grr. :lightbulb: So I called the Vandy post office to see if I had mail.

Guy comes back and starts talking in that voice you use when you're about to break bad news to someone and you want to do it as gently as possible. "You don't have anything..." The sound you hear is my hopes being dashed. "Just some letter from the Vanderbilt Medical School Office of Admissions."

Then I called said office to make sure the letter was what I thought it was. The third person I talked to finally knew how to check my status. He asked for my AMCAS number. "No, sorry, you're not showing up. What's your last name? Nothing under that, either. We have no record of your application. That letter must be a mistake." Just when I'm blubbering about when my AMCAS was transmitted, he goes, "Wait! I was pushing the wrong button. Oh, here you are. You were invited to interview. Isn't that good news?" I recovered from my near-heart attack to gasp out an appropriate reply.

See you in Nashville!

for people flying out same day as interview, what are you gonna do with luggage?

for all of you interviewing, first of all congrats!! i'm going up the 26th and i'm really excited! i was just wondering if you all had received any info about your interviewer or anything - i though the interview schedule section of the secondary was supposed to be updated with details, but mine hasn't been yet, so all i know is that my interview is at 11. are we supposed to get any more info than this?
thanks!

wugirl-

i called the office a few days ago and asked them the name of my interviewer. i'm not sure if it'll be online..

also to the others reading this thread, has anyone had trouble calling the admissions office? i can't get a connection about half the time, from cell or land lines.

interviewing on 9/24.. anyone else?

are there any non URMs that got a vandy interview with less than a 33? just curious. thanks.

Sorry.. I've seen that quite a bit on this forum and now I know... thanks.

I'm a minority (south asian).. but definitely not URM in the medical field 😳

If it helps at all.. I was under a 33 though.

i got 2 questions for all you vandy people. i just submitted my app, and at my college my gen chem classes were 6 hours total, but i got advanced standing credit for 2 hours of gen chem 1 (it's a total joke, like atoms and molecules). will they be cool with taking advanced standing for that, since i took the only premed chem courses offered?

also, how close is the holiday inn from light hall. i'm staying there tomorrow, but have to run over to light hall sometime to turn in my picture, release form, and money (which i forgot to do until today 😳 ).

my interview section lists my interviewer and a link to her home page complete with abstracts and publications. I was kind of intimidated actually... anyway, maybe they are just taking a while to input stuff... GOOD LUCK! :luck:

See you in Nashville!

This story is true. I think I just happened to be in Dr. Helderman's office when this happened (I am VMS I). Either that or he does this frequently?!

For all you applying, I would definitely recommend the student hosting program. I am actually hosting someone Thursday.

I would recommend showing up at 8:00 regardless of when your interview is and sit in on classes if you have time. Ask around for me (PM for name) if you go to any first year classes. Good luck!

so i've got a question for you. i've got an afternoon interview thursday so i'll be going to class on thursday morning, but after the interview what usually happens? do people usually stick around and check out the city or do they just go home?

All day Tuesday and Thursday, we have Anatomy. We are in class from 8-10, then in the lab from 10-12. Class again from 1-3 and lab from 3-5. Feel free to come to the lecture portions (Light Hall 208 - sit in the back so you can get out surreptitiously). When I interviewed, I split a cab with a few other interviewees and went downtown and checked it out a little. You can also walk around the old campus and the Peabody campus (both very beautiful), or check out the area around campus (bars, restaurants, etc.)

had my interview today....absolutely loved the place...hospital is amazing, people are really friendly, students seem to be happy. if i got in on october 15 i would definitely reconsider going to a lot of other interviews. i'd say after seeing the campus and talking to people, the school has increased from maybe 7 on my list to top 3.

good luck to all you people who have upcoming interviews. i think i was asked 4 questions total...and my interviewer and i talked for an hour and a half.

I'll be there on the 27th. Hey PATZAN, what's the class schedule on Fridays? My interview isn't until the afternoon.

Any recommendations on which hotels to use? I know there's the list on the website, I'm wondering among those of you who interviewed last year or live there, etc would suggest?

It depends on the Friday. We always have biochem from 8-10. Sometimes we have an anatomy class in the morning after that, sometimes it is in the afternoon, and sometimes it is open. On the 27th, we have biochem from 8-10, and anatomy from 10-12, and then we are done for the day.

Do the applicant hosting program (see website). It's free and they'll probably feed you and give you a ride to school (and possibly the airport depending on their availability and helpfulness)....and you get to see a perspective from a current student.

with everyone saying the interviews are so relaxed, do they really matter besides serving as a sanity check? it seems like interviews don't really affect your chances of getting in unless you are crazy or really arrogant

I think that our class has a great variety of personality types as well. They want to get to know you and see how you would fit in to the class.

I hope I get into Vandy. I heard there's a lot of hot guys there. Is it true?

I'm a Caucasian-Cherokee mix with less a 33 and I got an interview offer. The person who schedules interviews asked me if I would like to speak to the diversity affairs office. I'm not THAT Indian.

I think she asks everyone that...cause I am white as white can get and I got that question...

I also got "would you like to speak to a specific faculty member" I'm like....uhhh...I don't know any...

Does anyone know how long it takes for the web status page to update with the interview details? I have mine scheduled for mid-September, but I wasn't told whether it's a morning or afternoon interview..

Mine wasn't updated and I finally called a week before my interview. They updated it that day. I think it was because it sometimes takes longer to confirm with the faculty that they'll be available to do the interview.
