Hey guys,

I got my scores today, and i'm extremely dissapointed and even a bit embarassed to post them here. I only scored an 84. Needless to say I was very let down as I had though that I had performed well enough to get a 90
I feel the curve was heavily against me in my score. Especially in dental anatomy where i got a 84. I could almost say with 100 percent certainty that at most i missed 15 questions on that section adn i still only scored an 84...if that is true then that means i dind't get any points help from the curve which isn't possible...i just feel like i got robbed...but i' not gonna be a sore loser about it..i earned what i got and that's the way it goes. Coulda Shoulda, Woulda, does'nt matter once ou get your scores... To everyone that's been following my advice on how to study for this exam..i hope you dont feel let down that i only got an 84...becasue as I'm sure all of you did i also thought i would score a 90. But that's the way the cookie crumbles...
My score breakdown is as follows
Anatomy-83
Biochem/physio-83
Patho-85
Dental antomy-84

I still feel as though I knew my stuff well enough to get a better score than that but i'm not gonna whine about it...but please guys post some encouraging words for me cuz i'm absolutly distraught right now. From my senior SDN'ers or anyone that knows...is there any chance at all of me getting into any advanced standing prgram with that score? i heard nyu accepted some people last year with an 80...so I hope that there is a chance for me there...i doubt i can get into BU with that ...i dont knwo what to do now..should i start studying again? Shoudl i go ahead and apply with those scores...and try my chances..if i take it again i dotn wanna be sending my apps. into late cuz they go on a rolling admissions basis...so please guys help me out my GPA is like a 3.6 and i have a perfect score on the Toefl (300) CBT
I have 8 months work expereince too in pakistan, and im getting a letter from a dentist in the US as well...So any encouraging words would help. To everyone that supported me and helped me study for this...all the SDN friends i've made along the way thank you for your help..wihtout u guys I wouldn't have even been able to score an 84. I' m sorry i'm sounding so down but i'm just really low right now...All I can do is pray for the best now...and i hope you guys do the same for me...this exam is tough....work hard and study hard i hope u all get the results you want.

I say you should go ahead and apply.I know someone who got into Upenn with your Part1 score,NYU iwould say you'll surely get in.Your Toefl and GPA are very good.Anyways,chin up and good luck.Am sure you'll make it 👍 !

well, im going to have say it is now fate from here. as im waiting for my scores (10 days), i have to be able to think i could be in that situation. i would apply to those univ. suggested, as i know of someone who got in with an 84. at first i thought that was a good score, (comparing to most usmle scores), but that changed when i came here, sdn. lots of competition, but with some good luck, and a good interview, its possible.

so it seems there may have been a 1 point curve, meaning you got 85 questions right. too many people did well, too many 99/98. its all good, no regrets, and move forward.

Hey Khurram,

I just want to say that your score is not that bad at all.
But, since the competition is so much, I would say, maybe you should give the exam again. Most schools prefer candidates with scores of 90 and above, even if they mention that they take candidates with scores of 85 and above.
But, (mind you there is always a BUT !) NYU, as you have mentioned has been taking in candidates with scores even below 84. But you have to apply as soon as possible. As the saying goes, 'the early bird catches the worm'. So try your luck with NYU.
UPENN does take candidates with scores below 84, but again that depends on how smart you are, your credentials and of course work experience ! Try it there too.
Dont even waste your time on BU.
But again, like I said, maybe you should try to give the exam again. Now that you are fresh from studying the part I subjects, I dont think you should have a problem giving it again in Dec or so.
Think of it this way. Do you want to waste your time waiting n' hoping n' praying that you get into to school with a score you are doubtful of getting into with or try again with all you might and strength, putting in all the effort that you will reap what you sow ?
So, go ahead and apply to atleast NYU and UPENN cause you never what fate brings you but at the same time try to give the exam again.
And while you apply to these two schools, dont waste your time thinking you will get in or so. Just apply and sit back relax and go back to studying your part I.

Remember, your score is not bad at all for your first time attempt. See the bright side of this. You didnt fail the exam and you have had the exposure to the exam.
Cheer up, buddy ! I think you are good to go !!!! You will do well.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words, lots of people i have talked to are saying the thing that i should apply to upenn adn NYU and lots are saying that it's likely i'll get into NYU...but at the same time that worry is always at the back of ure head u know....so i willl apply to those two and i will probably give the exam again then in three months time when i'm eligible for it...let' see though how things go inshallah i'll get in somehwere...thanks again guys

I think i might have a shot at NYU or upenn or uOP if you know Meggs on this forum she got into UOP with an 84 as well...so it's a good sign for me! I"m tryin to keep my head up about it it just sucks though when i thought i did better usually it's the case that u end up diong better than u thought but i guess here the scenario was reversed! Good luck guys, dont worry bout it 'msure u'll do better than i did...i'm not a genius or even close!!! GavinC dude, i know u know ure stuff really well i'm sure u will get a 90 or better good luck..keep in touch and let me know how u guys do,, keep posting by the way i'm still feelin quite low 🙁

That's the best post i've gotten so far thank you very much Ragini...I've come to realize that I scored pretty well it's just that the competition is such that's its difficult these days.. A bunch of friends have told me that I have a good shot at NYU wiht my scores so tha'st my first choice..althogh i'm applying to a bunch of places...And fast!!!! Thank you again for your encouraging words, and inshallah (god willing) myself and all the rest of you here will get into the program you want. Keep studying hard guys! even an 84 is hard to come by!!! hahah...

Dentistry sometimes is not about scores, its about what kind person you are.

Im studying for the CBT as well, I will apply your method because i think is great. people like you give us mere mortals hope to get over an 80 in part one.

and like someone said, if you are a citizen you stand a much better chance. and i am sure your all round performance- gpa, etc.- counts too. plus if you ace the interview, they will have to take you!!!

Anyhelp just needed just pm me..even though i didn't get a spectacular score i do think my method for studying was excellent..u just need a little luck sometimes to get u those extra few points and it wan't wit me but that's cool with me...i worked hard and i know i gave my best effort (one of hte few times in life that i actually have!)...

id dint' want get to personal in this guys face since i feel a bit sorry for FOBS like him...i dont even know if he made it off the boat he might still be using his ultrasonic scaler on the captain of the ship! Dear Khurram,
Hadn't been able to log on for a few days and didn't know of your score until now...I know it must be quite disappointing not to be awarded well enough for our efforts when we know we deserve much better...But, don't worry there is something really good in store for us...I alwayz believe in that.Think positive and celebrate your efforts and your commitment and dedication... Celebrate the people who have been with you all along and are still praying for you...

When we feel down & low nothing seems worth trying....you may feel- why try??? but, then it' in times like these that you must persevere and push through...I think you should apply to as many schools as possible ( I understand there are a few schools that have min 85 as a requirement) but there are schools that rely more on your overall grades and credentials rather than just stick to your board scores...Take Upenn for instance...they don't worry about the score...you have experience as a dentist too....that is such a plus point...
If you look around in this forum there have been quite a few SDNers who have made it into good schools without having a great score too...Moreover dexterity tests give the skilled person an edge over others...keep thinking about positive things, concentrate on you strengths...An early application can make the difference of getting in or not in many cases...I'm saying this with personal experience...so, DON'T DELAY....
...all in all, if you still feel unsatisfied and want to give it another go...then be it...apply early anyways...you can send in a newer score later...(if that's permitted- I'm not sure if we are allowed that)...
Bounce back up with the spirit you have been showing so far....things will look up soon...God bless!!!

Once again everybody i just wanted to say thanks...i would have probably collapsed by now if it werent' for u guys! ok one quick question, i know applying early is best ..I should have all my documents completely in by the lastest at the end of this month..i'm still waiting for my WES evaluation thats' why...so do u tink that's getting to late? i mean they only opened there apps in august i think so i still think that's early on that i'm applying isn't it? i wanan wait for my wes cuz i think i might have a better GPA...and i dont see anywhre that NYU wants reco letters should i send them anyways??? let me know guys and gals

last time i had a score of 84 and 2.8,347.
i was not called for any interviews.so i wud say its better to retake and mean while apply to all the schools .i am sure u will get a better score and then if u send ur scores u will have better chances.by the way i had work exp(dental ass) with an american doctor and a rec letter from him.

does anyone has any idea as to how many attempts are allowed for part 1(i mean even if u pass in one attempt u can retake the entire exam to improve ur score)... and are all these attempts mentioned on ur official score report that is sent directly to the universities....

Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted....I became a bit busy n couldn't log onto SDN regularly.Well...I took my CBT on aug 6th...n was expected to receive my scores on 16th....I waited for 1 more day....and I called up ADA and finally got them on 23rd. 🙄 I got an average of 91.....but frankly I expected a bit more....as I was so elated after the exam and postive abt my answers...duh!Don't know whether lady luck is not on my side or is it abt the curve or something wrong with my preparation only 🙁 .Anyhow...I guess it'll be fine as long as it can get me into some school.(P.S:before somebody attacks me for not feeling great for my score😀....it's just a personal feeling and I don't have any work experience as I came here immediately after my graduation and we know how competitive this IDP is becoming these days 🙁 )
Overall CBT experience is good....but am just wondering if the curve has become small for CBT people.I guess they change the curve once in 3 months or so! I haven't heard/seen many ppl with higher 90's who took their exam from june onwards.Perhaps future test takers can do some search and decide b/w written and CBT versions. 🙂

In b/w Khurram.....your GPA is good and also being a citizen,a letter from a dentist here are definitely the plus points for you.If you have your recos,SOP etc ready apply soon with this score.If you can get into a school that will be well and good.....Insha allah 🙂 . If not(God forbid)u can retake the exam and u can definitely excel as you'll be already familiar with all the stuff. Just for now apply to the schools and see.Good luck
