That vet school started last month, and they kept trying to contact me, but the e-mails got tagged as spam... They let me stay in, but I started 2-3 weeks behind the class.

🙁

I'm also scared to death of oversleeping every day when vet school starts.

I ALWAYS wake up @ 6am on work/school days (for the last 15 years) - but I am such a deep sleeper, then alarm clocks have no effect on me and my sleep schedule is out of my control.

I always have nightmares that I've been forgetting to go to an entire class for a few weeks and now there is no way I can make up my grade. Thats what happens after 4 years of college and then trying to get into vet school...your dreams are about late papers and scantrons you didn't put your name on.
I had a reoccurring nightmare that I was in an auditorium full of vet school canidates and everyone got chosen except for me because when my name was called my mentor/LOR guy didn't back me...scary stuff

For me its English class, and I have 1 night to read 3 books and take a final.

Scary part, it actually happened to me. My first year as a Grad Student, I was techincally a "Unclassified Undergrad", as I still needed one req., and therefore had to take 12 credits to be fulltime (instead of 9).

I registered for a philosophy class (ethics), or so I thought. 2 MONTHS into the class, the prof. tells me I am not on the roster. Turns out I registered for Logic - and had been a no show for the entire month. Pulled a B in the class with the skin of my teeth (and a letter from the other prof. explaining the mess up).

I just had the same type of dream last night. I dreamed that I missed my first class of vet school because they moved it and I couldn't find it anywhere. I guess that may not sound really bad, but I am a super punctual person, so it was pretty scary to me. I'm sure this dream will be more reoccurring the closer we get to actually starting school.

If it makes anyone feel better, I would still have those dreams 6 years out of undergrad. I would dream that I had enrolled in a class and forgotten to attend, or that I was taking an online class and received the wrong lecture materials (or old versions.) I would even have dreams where I had attended the entire class then missed the final...or when we were moving, that we moved before I took the final!

Odd, huh? Apparently school is one of the things I dream about when stressed! Some of the dreams were so real that when I woke up, I had to really think about whether or not I was in a class. Or I would wake up with that anxious paniced late for a test feeling and have to spend time convincing myself it wasn't true. My husband has seen me roll out of bed in a hurry with the idea that I had to hustle to a test.....and not even be enrolled.

No Imagination, they make alarms now that light up the room, release scents, and make noise. Could be worth trying. I find the light does more to wake me up than anything else. There is also a biorhythms alarm that is suppose to be good for people who sleep through most alarms. You wear a watch like contraption to bed, which monitors your sleep cycles, and only sounds the alarm when you are in the lightest phase of sleep. i have heard of psychologists using it to 'train' people to wake up to a regular alarm.

This is certainly not going to make anyone feel better, but my dad STILL has those kinds of dreams. He's 60 and was last a student when he was in his early 30s doing his PhD. Sadly, that kind of thing never seems to go away.

i have dreams that i sleep through my alarm all the time... I haven't had the vet school related dreams yet.

Do you have a roommate or SO that can make sure you get up? inconvenient for them, but maybe just until your sleep schedule reworks itself.

Thanks Sum,

I am def. going to look into that, and will let you know what if anything works.

No SO to wake me, lives in another city. Besides, their is nothing harder then waking up when you have a warm body next to you - think it will be worse when she is around.

I'm gonna start google'ing fancy alarm clocks

There's one that jumps off the surface it's on and bobbles around the room while screeching at the top of its lungs...

I saw a video of that!

If you have a pet, you could always train the pet to bounce on you repeatedly every time the alarm goes off. One of my dogs knows 'wake 'em up' means to go dig himself under the covers and wiggle, kiss, and bounce on the sleeping human till they get out of bed. He only gets rewarded once the human is off the bed, so he won't stop being obnoxious until the person is on thier own 2 feet.

Our cat bites noses if she isn't fed by 5:30am. We have an autofeeder because of that (after 3 weeks hubby gave up on training her not to) but it would be a powerful morning alarm (she likes to bite the septum, which is a very tender spot!)

Brilliant.

That would be just cause for LAUNCHING said feline off the top of a very tall building! 😀

Things like this are exactly why a feline will NEVER be allowed inside a house I live in. They are fine out in the barn and all, but not in the actual house. Man!

I don't believe in outdoor cats (too much ecological destruction!)

Hubby would throw the cat each time (ex military, before he was really awake). He kept that up for a month before opting to purchase an expensive automatic feeder. She outlasted him. She does just fine with the auto feeder (no nose nips in over 3 years.)

Hey, it could be worse... I am having anxiety dreams about being in vet school too and I haven't even been accepted yet! Last night's was some weird thing about a welcome dinner put on by the class ahead of us and then moving into the dorms. Dorms??? Not sure where my brain got that one from!

But on the alarm thing... I have one of those fancy light/sound/smell alarms but found the light was too dim to have much impact and the scent beads had little impact and wore out quickly. So instead I have a seriously bright light box (the kind used to treat SAD) on a lamp timer that turns on about 15 minutes before my alarm goes off. It is really bright and annoying, and wakes me up enough such that by the time the alarm goes off I am willing to actually get up. This is especially helpful in the winter when mornings are so dark. I am not a morning person in the least. I have to get up at 5:50 for my current job, making me look forward to being in vet school where classes will probably start more like 8!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in vet school and I have:

woken up late and missed classes
accidently fallen somewhat asleep in class
elected not to show up on some occasions (using my judgement)
gone to a bar the night before an exam
...and I work part time

(I would also wager that many of my classmates have done similar things)

Guess what? I am totally fine. Tallying things up after finals, my grades are nothing to snub either.

My meyers briggs is ISFP and one of my traits is hating a set schedule and I'm terrible at being on time. Not everyone does things the same way - if it works for you that's all that needs to happen.

Nightmares? Bah, most of those situations don't sound too bad.

This coming from the guy who slept through his very last undergrad final for an important class required for his major. I only needed a 71 on that final to pull a passing grade in the class....

I still feel it wasn't my fault. It was a 10 AM final and some idiot spoofed an email at 9 AM to the class list saying the final was moved back 1 day due to scheduling issues. I woke up at like 9:03 AM and immediately checked my email. After spending most of the night up studying I considered it an miracle and went back to bed. Completely missing the correction email the professor sent at 9:05 AM saying it was a fake. Rolled out of bed at about 2 PM only to get the correction email, have a heart attack, and called the professor to beg for mercy. He let said I could come to his office right then to take the final and I did. Apparently there were like 3 of us that this happened to out of 120 or so in the class. Pulled a 69 on the final(and apparently the professor rounded up), passed the class with a D and went on to graduate.

David - I remember that story from a while ago, and it made me nearly puke then, as well. That would be absolutely horrible.

Maybe we could set up something like this for No Imagination every morning? I bet it woke you up right good.

I'm a really punctual person... I HATE being late for anything. When I know I have something important to get up for in the morning, sometimes I freak out so much that I can't even fall asleep because I'm too scared I'll sleep through my alarm! Then I just get so mad at myself for being dumb and wasting precious sleep time. This will be terrible for me should I get invited to interview anywhere. 🙁

Once, I set my alarm for the right time but I had left my phone on silent. :smack: I was supposed to turn in some assignment, so I went straight to my professor's office after I woke up and she let me turn it in still.

I have also been known to forget to set an alarm altogether! 😳

I do have those dreams about missing the first day or week or school and being totally behind or failing right off the bat... I guess it's probably normal for students to have dreams like that though since a lot of us have them!

This happens to me too! Esp if I'm traveling and have an early AM flight...I'll stay up really late w/ last minute packing and...oversleep! It happened twice! but luckily I wasn't charged extra fees for rescheduling... adrenaline does wonders to get your heart rate up though!

Your story reminded me of this clip someone else posted and just had to send AGAIN... b/c its so freakn funny. My cat does this all the time (w/o baseball bat!) esp the paw on your face thing.

Finally had my 1st vet school dream. All I remember was that I was waiting around at school several hours early so I could get the "right" seat.

I'm so calling 2 rows back and 2 seats in to the left from the center isle....

I remember the general area...but it's all relative. Good luck finding your lucky seat!

I'm so calling 2 rows back and 2 seats in to the left from the center isle....

It's all yours. I normally like sit in the first few rows as well; otherwise, I get sidetracked too easily.

It's funny how uncomfortable I am if I'm not in the right place during a lecture. I'm a fan of two or three rows back, right on the far edge of the room. Close enough to see the screen and everything well (I don't have great eyesight), far enough back to be invisible which I like, and easy to duck out if needed.

geez, i dont think i've had dreams of vet school yet.....but i do think about how vet school is going to be really hard....and then i get the overwhelmed feeling.

anyway, if you need a lot of light to wake up....my mom bought this automatic timer that will turn on and off at certain times of the day (sorta like what you'd put for an aquarium light) and i bought this light from ikea that starts off dim and then gets bright. it's not THAT bright (its a flower), but i bet you could plug 2 or 3 into the automatic timer.
