I don't have much, but i do have to move a big screen tv, a full size bed, and some other small furniture...basically the equivalent of one bedroom of stuff....just enough to have to force me to rent a truck and drive it 6 hours to GA. Like i really need to spend more $$$ that i don't have....just needed to vent.

Anyways, does anyone have any moving tips or recommendations for cheap moving companies???

sell all ur stuff... and get new stuff when u move to GA... no shipping cost, no renting a van. Im moving from Miami to philly... and all im taking is my CLOTHES! 😱

well...i don't have 6 hours to move but i do have 3... luckily my dad's helping me move. i'm taking all my clothes and little homey things with me in my car and he's bringing the bed, dresser, and chest of drawers in his truck. then i'm getting the rest of my stuff when i am moved. a lot cheaper that way and less hectic too.

my thinking is...compare the prices (online if you can) of whatever items you would need to buy if you decided to sell what you have now that way you know if you'd actually come out cheaper in the longer run by doing that or if it'd be more of a headache (time, effort, $$$)

btw...have you noticed how much it costs to set up your own place in order to turn it into a home??? and this is when my roomie already has some things! *sigh*

I know!!! EXPENSIVE!!! especially if you want to have nice things....my bf is actually going to buy a house within 6 months, so we will only be in the apt. for 6 months. Yes, I have to move twice...ugh....but when we are finally in the house, i think our best option is going to rooms-to-go or someplace where they offer no interest/payment till 2010 or whatever. i can't even think about it right now...

i think i decided the best way is to just get a small uhaul truck one way🙂

Oh wah! I just moved from Salt Lake City to Ft. Lauderdale. I sent all me and my wife's stuff by Roadway Express Trucking Company. They drop off the trailer, you load it, they pick it up seal off your stuff, load other frieght behind your stuff, drive it across the country, they drop it off at your new place, you unload all your stuff. We have enough funiture and things that we took up 6 or 7 feet of the trailer stacked to the top. You are charged by how many feet you take up so it may be cheaper for many of you than it was for me. It cost me $1,400 to ship it all the way across the country which includes the fuel surcharge. And the best part I just got to fly across the country and didn't have to worry about driving a U-Haul at 50 miles an hour. Good Luck to you all!!!

Another company that operates in a similar manner is ABF. Although I haven't used them myself, I have had friend use their services and had positive things to say. And, I agree, I hate moving too. I just moved three blocks this summer and it was the worst move of my life. I've moved across the country twice and never have I had so much trouble and stuff stolen and broken. I'm not moving from my apartment. Ever. ..thanks for letting me vent...

I used ABF this summer to move from Salt Lake City to Boston. It was exactly like the post above about Roadway Express... No problems on either end of the move and our stuff arrived safely and in good condition. I would use them again.

My hand was forced to go from Salt Lake City to Philly with a BUDGET TRUCK. If this is how you plan to move then go w/ budget. UHAUL blows chunks and I could rant all day. Budget was cheaper (reserve a truck months in advance) and the truck we had was brand new. After loading my stuff into a storage shed I drove back to Chicago. I am sick of driving! Three more weeks and I move back to Phila.!

I wanna vent too!

I did the sell & buy new stuff routine twice now - when I left dental school & moved to NYC, and now again when I left NYC & came to Nashville. Actually, I ran out of time to sell my stuff in NYC and ended up donating most of it to Salvation Army. Whatever fit in my Honda Civic is what made the cut to come to Nashville.

I hate moving! I can't buy nice things because I keep changing my place of residence. Every place I go is always temporary and transient. I'm hoping after I finish residency, I move back to the east coast and settle myself down for good!

And then I will buy stuff straight from the Pottery Barn catalog and never go to Ikea again.
